sigma dp1 questions

considering a dp1 and i had a question or two... well one question primarily. i understand that the camera has slow write times and auto focus but i am curious as to wether or not it can be set-up to shoot with a preset focal distance ala the film ricoh gr's? if set up that way is the shutter lag still slow? i do of course realize that "shutter lag" is more often then not "cheap auto focus lag".
i would be using it for documentary work and i don't need a machine gun. i need a quiet, simple and reliable compact useable at iso 400 (800 would be smashing!) that shoots when i press the shutter.
28mm seems to be my focal length of choice and i find myself at f4 quite a bit.
any input is greatly appreciated!
ps a few iso 800 b/w conversions would be appreciated too!

Hey there,

Using the manual focus mode, it is possible to preset the focus using a small wheel on the back. Then when you push the shutter the shot is instant - no shutter lag at all. And you can zoom in the screen to fine tune focus in live view. The autofocus struggles in low light but is fine otherwise. Overall I've found that once I got used to manual focus or the strengths of autofocus, I never find this camera slows me down. Write times are fairly long but again it depends on whether you are a slow considered shooter or wanting to rattle off 3 frames a second.

IQ is amazing, better than any other compact I've come across and totally usable up to ISO 800 especially in black and white (as the color images tend to desaturate a tad)

Thanks for the samples jamxo. I too was wondering if you could preset the focus on the DP1. I own a Ricoh GRDII and always shoot it in the "snap" mode which means no shutter lag at all. It will be interesting to see what the DP2 offers. I am interested in that camera because of the longer lens.

Hyperfocal distances for the DP1:

f4 12.60'
f5.6 8.93'
f8 6.33'
f11 4.49'

Focused at the Hyperfocal distance, the Depth of Field extends from 1/2 of the HD to infinity.....

So, that rules out any real reason to use auto focus....well, 90% of the time anyway...
The camera is instant at manual focus........just a pleasure....
For the first time in many years with many, many digital cameras, I am a happy camper....

I have a chance to buy this camera for $450 AUD ($310 USD) - at excellent/near new condition. Should I do it? I don't NEED yet another camera, but for an APSC 28mm compact..... very tempting....

If I don't buy it for myself, does anyone want me to buy it on their behalf?

The answer is yes.

The GR1 turns on and off with virtually no lag and the "to first shot" time is very short. The DP1, on the other hand, operates slowly in general. Power-on-to-first-shot is about 5 seconds. Otherwise, you can use it as a fairly capable street shooter as other posters have described.

No, this unit does not have any additional accessories - although I've been told that it's near new. I'll probably meet up with the guy next week when I get back home from my vacation.

Seems like there's plenty of interest. I'll just buy it and if I decide to sell it, I'll post it here for $310 + Postage + PayPal - I'm sure that will be a fair sale.

Does anybody own the DP1 as well as the Coolpix 4500 or Canon G5 (or did) and can thus comment on AF speed on the DP1 compared to the two old timers?
