My reasons for not keeping the SD1M
My reasons for not keeping the SD1M
Not sure where to put this post.
I'm going to return my SD1M. My reasons:
1) I don't really have the budget to feed another system in addition to a Fuji XF system. And because of reason #2 below, I've decided that the Fuji X system takes priority.
2) I'm not partial to the size/weight factor of the body+lens. Mind you, this is still a lot less than other FF DSLR combinations would be, but it is still not what I want. I should add, however, that the SD1M feels really good in the hand, the grip is excellent as reported, and the shutter sound is a pure joy.
3) It would be impossible to resist the temptation of an SD Quattro given the limitations of the SD1M body (especially lack of live view), but I almost certainly could not afford to upgrade (see #1).
I will however sorely miss the Sigma 8-16 lens paired with that sensor. I don't think the Fuji X system will offer anything comparable for years to come.

Once again, Keith shows the unparalleled strength of the Foveon Merrill sensor in color: intense colors and pastel colors in the same frame. Love it!

Finally clicked the 'buy' button at B&H for the 18-35 f1.8 last night. If this lens is all it's cracked up to be it will be near perfect for me with it's equivalent focal length of 27mm to 52mm ... along with the 50mm (75mm) f1.4 for portraits I shouldn't really need too much else.

I will have a slightly reduntant lens now with the 35mm f1.4 but I guess if I need that extra half stop of speed in that focal length it's there!

The lens should be here in a day or so and I plan to take next thursday (thusday week) off and go for a long drive and spend the day shooting in my favourite valley out the back of Brisbane. It's mostly old farms and grasslands etc ... taken a lot of photos in this area so it will be interesting to see the comparison from previous images with what the SD1M can do!

Congratulations! I expect you'll love the output from that lens on the Merrill sensor.
As for not needing too much else, well, seems like the 105 macro would solve that one!

The Fuji 10-24mm lens is about to hit the store shelves. Maybe that'll ease the pain of giving up the Sigma system!

Really liking the 50mm f1.4 as a portrait lens.

Nice use of grain in that portrait
Nice use of grain in that portrait
I actually love the grain from the Merrill sensor when it's used in monochrome mode at higher ISOs. It's the only digital grain I've seen that looks organic to the tonal transitions, and that includes the MM.
Every time I hear about the new Quattro sensor having much less noise at higher ISOs, I really begin to worry that it could be a little too clean for my tastes.
