Sigma SD1M ... any users out there?

You must be very close to having the SD1M by now Gary! 🙂

The more I think about the DSLR the more sense it's starting to make ... I absolutely love the file quality from my DP2M but I do find some of the camera's limitations a factor in varied shooting situations. I've never been totally at home with fixed lens compacts and I'm seldom in a situation where the size of this type of camera is of any real advantage to me.

X3 file processing is now firmly in my comfort zone ... more so than the output from my D700.
 
I just got it about a hour ago... Battery is in the charger. Give me a couple of days to play around and get my thoughts together. Will write a first impressions. 😛 😀

I'm still vacilating horribly between three options.

Keep the DP2M and add the 1M and 3M.

Buy an SD1M and sell the DP2M.

Don't do either! 😀

If I was to get the DSLR can anyone tell me what the Sigma 24-70 f2.8 zoom is like ... or where I might be able to find a review?

I think the main problem is that u are a 35fov type of guy... Even if u get the sd1m, I think u should keep the dp2m. U got another camera u could have taken to your artist friends party and remained unobtrusive? Dslr mirror slap vs a leaf shutter quietness?

I think u bounded pretty well w/ the dp2m.

Ps. I forgot to remind u.. Dp can do monochrom in raw, sd1m has no such setting.

That 18-35 f1.8 does look interesting Gary and B&H have it in stock.


If I was adventurous enough to get the DSLR I would really prefer to use all primes but I'd need three and that really adds up dollar wise.

I use a zoom on my D700 occasionally for gallery openings but I'm not really a fan!

Why not just get the 24f1.8 to start w/ then? If u don't print big, u can crop to 35 (50fov). Get the other lenses when u got the cash..

Ps. Or get the dp1m and out a 35 ovf on it.. Crop to 35 fov if u don't print big that is plus the 19 on the dp1 is known to be a little soft in the corners..

Congratulations, Gary, you got me to look at the SD1 Merrill page on Sigma's website. I think you know how much I would love to have a real wide angle on the X3F sensor, and a fast normal is very attractive, too. But it's not for me (he says while scrambling for an antidote😱).

I can't believe that Sigma didn't put live view on the SD1. (shakes head).

Lets c there is a 10-20, 9-18, and I think a 12-24. 24 and 28 f1.8s plus 30, 35, 50, 80ish f1.4s. A real fast normal zoom 18-35f1.8.

Anyway from what I have been reading, the better lenses look like the one they have been releasing the last couple of years. The issue is really related more to qa manufacturing issues that they have tightened up on... Some of the lenses like the 24-70 Keith is interested in was designed a long time ago, lens technology gets better.

The lens rental test I posted for the 30f1.4 vs newer model 30f1.4 is a prime example. The corners are so much better on the new one.

Live view maybe a CPU hp issue. The dp camera line was designed later...

The 9-18 looks very good.

Of the 3 DPMs, the DP1M is the one I would most like to see replaced. Not so much cuz of the corners, but because of the fov. 28 efov is really only good in fluid fast action situations. But that is not the DPM series strong point anyway. I want a wide/superwide DPM for landscape and static situations. It would be much much better to have 24 or 21. YMMV.

Yes .... I read some other stuff last night that indicates the lens is adequate and no more. It also mentioned some quality control issues. If I did take the plunge with the SD1M I think it would be fast primes all the way.

The zoom I use on my D700 is a $1600 Nikkor and although I find it useful in certain situations it suffers from quite bad pin cushion distortion at the long end and is a bit soft wide open IMO.
 
A couple of stunning images in that link! There's no doubt that this camera can deliver the goods provided you have the patience to deal with a few minor issues. It would be a PITA to see a 'moment' flit by while the camera had a full buffer and didn't want to play though! 😀
 
am getting caught by Sigma enthusiasm from this forum 😛 SD15 seems to sell pretty cheap these days. would anyone consider still it, paired e.g. with 30/1.4?

downloaded ProPhoto from Sigma website just to play around a bit. not as intuitive as LR and others, but not too bad either.

Margus shoots w/ the prior gen of the sensor in his dp non-Merrill series camera. It is essentially the same as a sd15 (5mp - 15 foveon speak).. An example of his work can be found here.

I find that the prior generation sensor is not quite as good in terms of micro detail.. But as u can c from these examples, I love how silky smooth and rich they are.. They still have ample detail.

Margus also posts in the foveon dp & sd image thread as well. Before, I got my sd1m, I had considered the sd15 just because these silky smooth rich images of his. Here is one of many from that thread
