Sigma SD1M ... any users out there?

Weight wise, the sd1m is 25 oz compared to around 20 0z for my dp2m plus rrs grip (12.5 oz w/o grip). So slightly more weight then what I would normally carry, but almost twice the height and slightly thicker.

My Fuji xp1 body 15.9 plus Fuji hand grip (around 5-6 oz) that's maybe 23 oz, so pretty close to sd1m.. But both the Fuji and sd1m example does not even have a lens weight associated w/ it, so the xp1 vs sd1m is a closer reality check.

I would really like to see through the viewfinder of the SD1M .... that's a critical point for me. My vision can be pretty ropey some days!

Keith,
The viewfinder of the SD1 is not bright. That was disappointing to me. That may be partly (or largely) because of the cheap 18-250mm lens I am using. I'll know soon because my 50mm f/1.4 should be here tomorrow.
Nevertheless, the viewfinder isn't nearly as bright as my Canon 5D Mark II.

Please get back to this thread when you've tried the camera with that lens Eric. 🙂

I've been pretty spoiled DSLR wise with my D700 which I generally only use with fast primes. As I would with the Sigma of course!

Stumbled upon this during a google search. Have no clue in terms of how good this was. But listed a bunch of people selling in your neck of woods.

A lot of those are drop shippers ... I recognise several names there. I bought my D700 this way as I knew the camera was exactly what I needed so no need to handle one in the flesh.

I noticed the other day that one of Australia's largest camera outlets DCW no longer stocks Sigma cameras ... they did a few weeks ago when I checked! Some of these places are real shockers ... when I was in their retail store a while ago I asked about the latest Pentax DSLRs and the bonehead behind the counter told me they'd been selling a few but he personally thought they were overpriced crap! 🙄

After all this investigation... There is no fixed length 14 or 16 (21 or 24) lens. All the lenses in this range are zooms 🙁. On the other hand, the 30f1.4, 50f1.8 and 100f2.8 macro are attractive.

W/ my existing dp1 & 2 Merrill's, I can c supplementing from starting from the 30f1.4 on, at the cost of twice as big, almost twice as heavy w/30. But once I drop the initial cost, it ends up in reality how many more lenses I really want to get.

The big plus over the dp Merrill series is
- faster af
- faster lenses (2 stops better)
- more lenses to choose from
- infrared capable (450 to have maxmax convert a camera)
- no need to buy a rrs grip (160), built in grip
- remote shutter release
- UI is basically same as dp Merrill
- slr viewfinder
- bulb

The minus
- bigger and heavier (more than 2x when u add lens)
- initial cost compared to dp series more 3 to 4x when u add cost of one lens unless u deduct 450+160 from the 1900 for things on my list
- CF instead of SD memory card
- no fixed focal length 21 or 24 equiv lens ( can't find one on b&h for SA mount)
- I can get a d600 for around same price (ff 24mp) and I still have my Nikon lenses around but it is not a foveon sensor (I just like the look)
- like the dp Merrill series, forget high iso

Now if u add the q4 rumor into this, what is probability that it will be
- wider than 28 equiv focal
- longer than 50
- a zoom (due to the dp4/dpz part of rumor)
Right now I don't c longer than 50 is a high probability. That leaves zoom which I don't think i would care about or wider than 28 which I would want. Since no fixed 21 or 24 anyway for SA mount lenses, it would end up complimentary.

Did I miss anything?

Gary

You didn't miss much Gary! 😀

If ... and I say 'if' I got one of these the first lens I would get would be the 24mm for a 35mm equivalent field of view.

35mm really is the do all focal lengthe for me and has been on my D700 for a long time.

Forgot about the 24.

My preferred equiv ff focal lengths are 21-40-75-90-135 (rf) or 21-24-35-50-90-135-200 plus 90-100ish macro (slr) depending on camera system.

With my luck if I buy it now, in q4 they will announce a new version of the sd1m, it has been over 2years since they announced the expensive sd1 only to rebadge it as a sd1m... 🙁

I wonder what changes they would undertake with a potential replacement?

Some possible improvements could be
- sensor related
-- ff (I doubt)
-- APS-h (I doubt)
-- better high iso vs noise (would love color to 1600)
-- 24 mp or higher (when sd1 was announced, the d600 or 800 was not around)
- digital path
-- faster processing
-- direct tiff or dng support
-- live view support
-- better Jpg processing
- others
-- sd instead of cf
-- dual sd or cf card support
-- faster write time to memory card
-- higher resolution LCD
-- go to csc style instead using an evf like the one on Sony Nex or Fuji xe1 (highly unlikely), more likely to be a derivative of the long wished for csc dp as opposed to a Pentax K style dslr..
-- movie support (i never use it, but there are people wanting it)
-- sensor cleaner

Anyway just some guesses. But I have not heard of any rumors about a next gen yet, mainly making a supposition.

With the general move away from DSLRs to mirrorless for many well heeled hobby shooters they may not bother? The current model obviously hasn't set the photography world alight! 😛

True.. They may just concentrate on their dp Merrill series. But for lensrental website to carry the sd1m, there has got to e enough interest out there.

If I though they were not intending to bring out a new model in the immediate future that would definitely sway me.

Part of the problem is that if people don't buy because they are worried about this, then it becomes a self fulfilled prophecy in a way... I tend not to worry about it, the camera just needs to stand on its own merits.

Totally agree, it's so easy to get wrapped up in a fear of obsolescence, or of being left behind. It's liberating to just not worry about what manufacturers are doing, and just worry about what you're doing.

The self-fulfilled prophecy is probably bang on the money too, I wonder how many computer platforms would still be popular if people just got what they wanted and not worried about what manufacturers were doing next.
