Condensation

Condensation

Hi all, I'll be ducking back to that part of the world for a couple of weeks, and am thinking of bringing my G2 and a couple of lenses. Just wondering. I go in/out a lot of a/c cars and buildings, and I've noticed in the past that my lenses and viewfinder fog up very frequently. What is the risk of the lens developing fungus at some later point from these frequent condensation episodes?

I try my best to keep the lenses stored (for the duration of my stay) in a tupperware box or bag with some silica gel, nothing sophisticated available like a dry box or a hydrometer, unfortunately...

Advice would be appreciated, I'd hate to have to deal with fungus issues esp when I regard some lenses as irreplaceable...

regards, Jin
Hello Jin,
The silence is deafening around here :)
From my observations i don't think you'll have a longer-term problem with fungus. I'm not sure that condensation forms between lens elements- I suppose this depends on how well lenses are sealed. Condensation soon evaporates from the surfaces where it forms. When your equipment is back in a less moisture laden climate the humidity inside camera (& lenses) will equilibrate with the atmosphere.

Fungal growth is inhibited by UV, & if anything I'd sguust you not put the camera into a closed tupperware- I'd let it breathe & give it light.. & happy holdiays

Thanks a lot, David. I'll do just that.

By the way, with such a long thread, isn't it about time this thread got its separate section? ;)

Hello anybody home?

Hello anybody home?

Peter, Terence, Justin

Ooi! anybody home? I've been out of action for a year, but now I'm back.
Peter, where is the durian you promised me last year?

In the meantime... I waiting for a little call from Cathay photo about a little black digital camera that is on waiting list for second shipment. heh heh heh.

Welcome back Nick!

Don't tell me its the digital M8!

It is for an M8 but I'll believe it when I see it.
Right now it is still on a long waiting list.

Nick

Yoo hoo! Anybody home? Nick, did the M8 finally come? I just had a fondle last week when I popped into Cathay... I'm not sure if it's worth its $7800!

hi david, doing pretty great. had a short break from photography before slowly getting back into it a few months back. certainly back into film in a bigger way, the last couple of purchases have all been film bodies and I'm actually depleting my stockpile of slides which I've built up. and you?

Terence

I chickened out of the M8 after reading about all the problems.
It is still the M6 for me.
Maybe the M9...

Hello! my name is Andrew and I just discovered that Singapore and Malaysian RF users have a space on RFF .... bit slow ah??

I live in Brunei - am I eligible to participate in discussions? Brunei is almost Malaysia! (don't tell anyone I said that!)

Me too, just discovered this thread. Some of the nicks look familiar. I am from Singapore and hello to all of you. :)

Hello Andrew, welcome to this (quiet, no silent) part of RFF. Of course you can join in- Brunei or not; national boundaries are merely accidents of history.:D

Hello Fuwen, welcome. Unsure where all the S'pore folk are but it's possible you'll encounter several at Peninsula Plaza on a saturday..

Hi Terence,Interesting blog entries on the Doulos & crew.
I'm OK, just neck deep in a literature review for my thesis, 3 unfinished rolls in 3 cameras tell the story

Greetings to all,

David

Welcome to the thread!

Its been awhile since any activity took place here!

Hi

Hi

Just to say HI!!

And suddenly we burst into life again.

Welcome to the Singapore / Malaysia (and some affiliated Malaysians with Taiwanese backgrounds...) / Brunei / Thailand / (wasn't there a Vietnamese post in all this also?) subforum of the RFF.

It used to be quite busy here, even had meetings in Terence's house to drool at his cameras. But all that stopped when I came back. Where is everyone now? What's everyone been upto?
Peter, hiding from me issit? Where is my durian? 2 years liao leh.

I've been into a new hobby, flying RC planes. So I was out for awhile.

I've just rekindled my shooting, especially after my recent trip to Lijiang.
Was just in time for the cherry blossoms! 5 days and 400 photos later (much editing needed) my trigger finger is starting to itch again. The M6 is back out again.

I also recently CLA'd my dad's old yashica electro cc, a nice aperture priority only 35mm F1.8. but top shutter speed is a useless 1/250. Has not been worked out yet.

What have the rest of you been up to?

Nick

David - Thanks, I'm making another trip to the ship in 2 weeks, this time in Taipei. There are plans afoot to publish a book telling the Doulos story before the ship retires in a couple of years.

Nick - Aiya... but it's a good move, I don't think the M8 is worth the dosh. I had a look at it for the first time last week and my initial impression was that it was a little bulky, had horrible auto WB settings and kinda noisy (images and operation).

What's up with me? Not a whole lot except I've started to embrace film a whole lot more these days. Recent purchases have included a Contax G2, Mamiya 645 AF, Mamiya 7ii, Widelux and a Fuji GX617. My panos have really taken off and I can't seem to get enough of the wide formats. The Xpan is seeing a lot more use than it did last year and has sometimes been used as my primary camera for my frequent trips in place of the DSLR... amazing... who would've thought? :)

I think we need to organise another get together soon, once we resurrect the other missing members of this thread.

Last but not least, a warm welcome to the new posters. Hope you'll populate this thread and keep it alive! It was dormant for way too long.
