Buy the M8. It's not an investment, as others have stated. Cameras have limited resale value. I saw an "old" D30 for sale there for $225 so forget resale value. the M8 may hold up better but that's a crazy investment, buying it because it won't lose as much value as another camera.
All said and done, it's a toy unless you're a pro, in which case you probably wouldn't ask the question. I would suggest that if you aren't used to using Photoshop then this will be the biggest change in your workflow from a wet darkroom.
As another poster said, if you don't buy it then you'll always hanker after it. And yes, htere is something better around the corner in 5 years or less but then again, there is something better around the corner after that as well.

Long Live Film!!!
shenkerian said:I think for a once-in-a-lifetime purchase, any current digital camera is a poor choice. An M3 can use the newest film just like an MP, but an M8 will forever have the same sensor. And sensors are (very rapidly) getting better. I'd set the money aside if I were you.
yup...
I'd look at the mp anytime. The M8 will probably be another DCS (kodak) system down the road (5 yrs), well, maybe a bit better because of the red dot. Once selling for over 6$K, you can now get a body (mint) on the bay for 180$. :bang:
If you really wanted digital, get a user R-D1. Yeah, time is money and etc etc, but are you really earning a living from shooting?
just my 2 cents.

No doubt in my mind, if it were me, I'd use that money to travel and take pictures of something really cool with the camera I already have. Well...I might buy a lens too.

When I first got my M8 I sold my film M to buy extra glass. I eventually bought another film body and very much enjoy the choice of 'slides or M8 ' . 'Film and darkroom or ditigal and computer
.(what shall I do today?).
You can not seriously chose between Fim vs digital long term. This is an impossible choice. Eventually you need both and enjoy the relative strengths and weaknesses of both. Get the M8 now and a film body when you can.

i have a really excellent Leica III c / Leica IIIf red dial and twin black Leica II '32 / 33 ... so slides are well catered for ! I love the atmosphere of the Elmars amd Summitar , and hoped that it would work on the M8.
A year ago , ANY Leica was just a dream - but an inheritance co'incided with a severe excelleration of Autisic lostness , which is really dee'sruptive .
My Leicas and USSR prtenders just keep me snae !
I am once again looking up in London town - literally - up there the buildings still wear their history in bite size snapshots - but The Canon G2 digibox is souless ...
Now I have seen an ex-dem M8 in black - mint from my favourite dealer [ important to me ] ... saving £400 ... but I so wanted the vintage looking chrome one ! Buy £400 = lenses !!!
And it's still very much the dream ...
Trying to convince my ''banker ''.. one of the problems of ASdee lostness - dee pendancy and control - can't have it all ways though !
I just think how many real photographers would love to have that deelemma !
Thanks for not calling me stupid or anything ...my Leicas are really an escape for me ...

Just take an M8 for a walk in London and see how you feel. Keep the pictures on your own memory card and examine them at your leisure. It really is the only way to decide about this camera.

I would forget about cameras. What I would do is... I would go out with my wife and have a blast of a time. Memories that would last forever.

Yeh warlord ... but gender dee'sphoria wished on her in the last decade means tolerating me , so an M8 is an escape from the resentment and betrayal - though I had no idea what my problems were 'till recently ... precarious postition now ... but she won't let anything bad happen to me , with the Autistic lostbness ... and is still there for me ....
