Sling strap (gordy's or other)...how safe on a strap lug?

I'm thinking about ordering a sling strap from Gordy - I previously used Black Rapid straps on my DSLRs. That is, until I discovered that the tripod attachment tends to work its way loose (causing chest pains and expletives in equal intensity). So it's a great idea in theory but really sh**y in execution.

I see that gordy offers an option to attach the sling to your camera via the strap lugs. That sounds more secure than a tripod screw. But is there any additional risk since the all of the camera's weight will now be supported by a single strap lug? I'll be using any one of my M bodies, and the biggest lenses I own are a 90/2 early summicron & a 35mm 1.2. Anyone have any experience (good or bad) using a sling strap on an M body?

I have one (and love it!) for my X-T1.. It uses the string connector on the lug.

They have an entire page dedicated to how strong the connectors are, you can see it here.

That being said, they're certainly not going to replace your camera for you if it fails, so it's a personal call.

When I was considering it for the M-E, I was definitely going with the split-ring lug-mount (and I still might at some point). After I got my A&A red strap in though, I just like that one too much to replace it so quickly.

It's a tough decision, I was nervous even thinking about it, but I'm sure people have done it with heavier cameras.

I will say the sling and that carabiner / metal-link work really, really well.. I love using it on my X-T1.

Let us know what you decide, especially if you go for it, I'd be interested in hearing about it.

I've heard it mentioned that the lugs on the camera are the weak points. Or that they weren't designed to handle the additional stress from a single attachment point. The Gordy straps themselves seem to be 1st class quality.

Which A&A strap are you using? I had the M3 saddle leather but it was way too short for me.

Yes, I heard that about about the lugs and it worried me as well.. :\

I'm using the ACAM-102.. It is pretty short, but that's one of the reasons I like it. My Gordy's sling is pretty long which is good for how it works, but for a regular style strap I prefer them a bit shorter.

Do you put a little bit of spit on the screw before you screw it in? That's what the manufacturer recommends. My wise uses BlackRapid all the time, since they came out (they gave her one) and has NEVER had it come loose. That includes dancing at parties at photokina, a couple of weeks in China including a two-hour hike to the Great Wall, or just gently wandering about.

I'd have far more faith in that than in a strap lug.

Cheers,

R.

+1 from me.

Since April 2009 I've been using a Blackrapid strap with my D90 and 18-200 VR zoom extensively without a single occurrence of the screw connector working loose. An excellent product, especially for its weight-bearing ability to make carrying a heavy camera for extended periods a doodle.

I personally would not rely on a single strap-lug to carry a camera, especially an M with a 90mm lens mounted...

Either go with the tripod socket, or a half-case with metal strap-lug / ring.

I'm only one little amateur, but I really don't understand the fascination with taking a precision instrument and lens, worth hundreds / thousands of dollars, and banging it around w/o a case...

Maybe that's my father's influence on me - the only time his beloved Nikon S was out of its case was to change film.

At any rate, I wouldn't rely on a single strap-lug.
