If you're going light with backpack, I'd recommend a camera small enough to hang on a neckstrap long enough for it to fit into a front shirt pocket or inside jacket pocket. You'll use it a lot more.
My everyday camera is a Nex5n with VC and Leitz lenses, but there's better options for rough travel.
I've had good results from the Sony TX series - particularly useful is the sweep panoramic ( better results than the Nex ). You can swim with it ( which also means it's dirtproof ) and designed for withstanding drops of 4 ft. Excellent macro also.
The Sony tx20 is 16MP and around $200 these days. Probably there's newer models now. Should have a couple of extra batteries.
Have a larger sensor camera stashed away in your bag for more careful images if you want.
