My friend at work recently gave me a SMC PENTAX-M 135mm f2.5

Made in Japan - K Version (Non Takumar)

I'm calling on your knowledge to help me find what a lens like this might be worth?

It's Minty! Beautiful and comes with the hard case too ;-)

Thanks for the help ;-)

I bought one of those a year or so ago and seems I paid around USA$150 for it. It was a nice lens and I enjoyed using it but it was a bit heavy and overlapped a zoom I had which was a lot lighter weight.

A minor point if you come to sell the lens. I suspect the lens you have is the SMC Pentax 135/2.5. This is not an M lens but one of the original series lenses based on the SMC Takumar. The only M version of the 135 was the 135/3.5 M.

Monetary worth: maybe $100 or more. Photographic worth? It's a neat, small, sharp, lens in a classic focal length. I use it on everything from a KX to my new K10D. Give it a try.

A good quality 135 in K mount is not easy. This lens and the early 3.5 versions were excellent and quite reasonably priced. The 135/2.8A is not regarded as one of Pentax's better efforts. The 125/1.8A is like rocking horse droppings. The 2 AF versions are very good but are difficult to find and go for around £200+. The CV 125/2.8 Macro is surperb but pricey and are getting rarer now they are discontinued. The "cheap" Takumar versions are not much better than the 3rd party ones.

All in all the K135/2.5 is probably the best value going. Excellent performance and still reasonable price. It is compatible with the dSLRs as well although you will have to use manual metering.

Kim,

You're right! I always make the mistake of adding the "-M" to my descriptions purely to denote that it's a manual lens! Which we know anyway...lol

So yes..I have the SMC Pentax 135/f2.5 :)

I've no plans to sell it, just wondering what it's worth?

Thanks for the replies everyone, if you can add more or tell me more, I would really appreciate it ;-)

The SMC 135mm f/2.5 lens has just about reached the status of a cult lens. The much more common non-SMC version, which I have, sells for practically a song. The SMC version gets bid up to a couple of hundred dollars sometimes.

All things considered, if I use a lens hood and pay attention to sources of light, flare isn't a problem.

Terminology again. The lens we are talking about here is the K mount SMC Pentax. I think the lenses you are talking about are the SMC Takumar and Super Takumar M42 ones. ;)

I have one. I like it, it has its own charm :)

As for the value, maybe not too much, I got mine along with a couple other lenses, so I can't tell.

imho, unless you need the money or don't intend to use the lens, hold onto it. As Kim C said above, this version is not that common and is highly regarded by many.
