So... how do I fix this?

Hi, all. I have a Rolleicord III I picked up for $85. The lenses had some fungus, but not anymore :D. There are two problems now:

1) The advance is a little wonky. When I'm winding on (usually frames 4-6, but sometimes others), I push in the button on the wind knob to advance on, but it locks after a fraction of a turn (like, say, 1/16 of a turn or less). If I push the button again (and again, and again) I can advance the film, but it's not the ideal situation, I'm afraid. What could be the problem and how would I go about fixing this?

2) The shutter speeds are slightly slow (and the slowest are a little gummed up).

I'm not interested in sending this out for a CLA. I need to do the work myself (I'm unemployed, so the idea of spending $150-$200 on an $85 camera is incredibly laughable to me).

Thank you,
--Bob

Unfortunately, Bob, if you don't want to or can't send have someone who knows what they are doing repair it... you may end up spend 30 minutes transforming it into a toally non-working camera. I'm sure you can study up and learn what needs to be done, but you need to learn how to totally overhaul both the advance mechanism, the shutter, and then you still need to know how to overhaul the focus mechanism too. Whatever you decide to do, good luck to you.

Search google books for Tomosy. His book on camera repair was avaible in full for free download at one time. One of the chapters was on restoring Rolleicord Vb, which is more current than your model but will give you an idea of what might be involved. Tomosy, however, doesn't offer step-by-step instructions so don't expect that. The innards of those small shutters can be complex and have many small parts and springs whose proper position isn't exactly intuitive. Also, he isn't particularly great at providing adequate (my opinion) guidance on lubrication.
