So I walk into my local camera shop and see...

I have the goggled Summaron 2.8 on my M3 and I like it very much. I don't know about the 'cron V.1, but I've also heard that the Summaron is better. I paid about $1100 for mine (it was a swap for a DR. so it's hard to translate to money). If I wanted a 'cron it would be V. 4. Can't afford it.

v. IV is nice but twice the price...

I think I am going to go back to look again and possibly get it on monday. Will let you guys know what happens.

Excellent-condition f/2.8 Summarons are going for $900 - $1150 on *-bay.

Sounds like you have a good buy if the 'cron is in good shape (consider having the salesman take some test shots at the near focusing range to rule out back-focus issues with the goggles. If he's had it in stock that long he shouldn't mind [with you paying for the film & development, of course]).

Good idea. Too bad I just sold my M8 a couple weeks ago due to my undying love of film. Well, not really, or this lens purchase would be out of the question. But it would have been nice to take some digital test shots to check for focus and rendering issues.

I use both the 35 v.1 and ASPH and at least my copy of the ASPH isn't clinical at all. The v.1 is incredibly well built, mine looked terrible when I bought it but Steve Choi told me the lens is in great shape and is good for another 30 years after his CLA. I have the non-goggled version that I use on an MP3 and M2 and the picture below was shot on the M2. I would say get the Summicron it's a really wonderful lens.

Picking up the cron today and let's just say I'm glad I made the offer I did! Thanks for the encouragement guys  especially to Biggles for encouraging me to "wave a fistful of banknotes" at them to see what happens.

Get the cron, and try haggling for a lower price. But the summaron is no slouch.

meh. I realize now I wanted it because it was so cheap. but haze is a pretty bad sign no? it's still a lot of money to drop into a lens, even if I'm getting it relatively cheap.

It is interesting how the prices went up in the last years. I won my 35/2.8 (goggled version, at least EX++) for $267 on the bay in Feb 2009. While this is a particularly good deal, I saw some others to go for a little more than that. This lens has never let me down.
