So long, and thanks for all the fish

Far out in the uncharted backwaters of the unfashionable end of the western spiral arm of the Galaxy lies a small unregarded yellow sun ...

Actually, what I wanted to say is that my R-D1/Guzzi website's now obsolete - I've just bought a Leica M8, and the R-D1 and the bike have to go to pay for it! :( :D (I'll still keep the site up and maintain it - so if anyone has any R-D1-related stuff, do send it to me.)

I'll be putting my R-D1 in the Classifieds in about a week, so I guess I won't be around these here parts much in the future ...

Rich,

Although already stated above by other grateful posters, I too want to offer my thanks for the in depth Rd-1s site. Mine is just a week old and I am still relying on your site for a lot of helpful answers.

Best of luck with the M8.

O.C.

RIch, you've provided immensely useful info for R-D1 users and we all thank you!

The M8 forum is just a click away -- see you over there!

I used a little mac program to grab the RD-1 Website. for future reference anyway. It has been of great interest and help.

I hope you don't mind Rich.
Not at all. However:

(1) I've no plans to take the site down - I'm happy maintaining and updating it ad infinitum (or ad nauseam...!)

(2) The website is published under a Creative Commons Licence - which means, basically, I've put it in the public domain - so anyone can do pretty much what they want with it (but please read the terms of the licence on my website). If any part is republished elsewhere (on the web or otherwise), please credit me and add a link. Note that the R-D1 pages will be updated from time to time, so probably not a good idea to put the pages on the web elsewhere - at least without a note that my site may contain more up-to-date info (in fact, i tweaked it a bit yesterday).

And what is a LRPS?
Licentiate of the Royal Photographic Society - the first of the professional qualifications awarded by the Society, so I'm now "Rich Cutler LRPS" (that's the first time I've written it down - like the other letters after my name, I doubt I'll ever use them: being English, it's considered somewhat gauche to flaunt such things...!).

I went after the qualification not because I need it (photography's a hobby for me) but because I wanted a target to aim at - if I don't set myself goals and projects, I find myself often meandering or, worse, standing still instead of advancing towards whatever it is I want to achieve (in this case, turning what I see into photographs that I'm happy with).

My R-D1 has now been sold - within an hour of placing the ad! :D

Judging by the interest in this camera even after its discontinuation, if Epson had got their act together (marketing, servicing), they could've had a successful product. But I guess they aren't really interested in a low-volume niche product ...

Hi there

As a former MotorGuzzi Le mans Mk 1 owner I can say you will regret selling your bike for the rest of your days Even though i have a Ducati 916 the guzzi still haunts me and i know i will have to have another sometime!!

The camera well ,ce la vie, its just a tool but the Guzzi!!!!!

John

I sold my Triumph for the same reason - riding alone got boring, and neither my wife nor friends were interested in joining me. Speed kiddies and the Harley people were not what I was looking for.

Thanks for the Epson site. I am looking for one right now, and I already own an M8. I want a back-up camera, and don't feel like buying a second Leica. I just want to be able to use my VC and Leica lenses.

See you on the forums :)

Thanks for all the hard work put into the site. I have saved numerous bits of information from your site for reference.

If I had own such a wonderful piece of machinery like your Guzzi, the only way I'd part with it is after I'm long done.

It's a nice bike, and it's been a pleasure owning it (usually!) for the past 13 years - but all things have a season, and I think it's time to let someone else enjoy it: only 40 miles in the past 2 years (zero last year) says something...

If anyone fancies buying it, PM me! It's £5000 firm - which I think is a good price considering that the rebuild cost me over £10,000! (Didn't mean to spend that much - you know how things go sometimes!) You can read all about it on the website.

(The camera connection for this post? I borrowed the money for the M8 to buy it before Leica's £300 price increase :)eek: ) and I want to pay it back ASAP!)

Ehi !!! Nobody noticed the title of the thread? It's from "Galactic Guide for hitch hikers!" ;-)

Also... I think Commencal is French (not sure...) : beautiful bikes, even if I prefer my Stumpjumper FSR 120

Good luck for your M8

Ciao

Nice title for the thread!! And I'm very grateful to you and all the information posted on your site, it allowed me to get my Epson working fine again. If you want to do the same thing on the M8, count on me to help/support/etc. Moreover because...

...I just bought a M8 too (this must be some kind of epidemics! ) from Lu (from this forum - already had bought a 28 'Cron ASPH from him and both were sweet deals, very friendly Lu!!) and first experiences are quite nice. I don't know yet if I'll sell my Epson because:

1) I seem to get a bit more of camera shake on the M8 (I really have to be very careful under 1/15...)

2) Under incadescent light, purple does show up... :)

In any case, I'm about to order the IR filters (so this should take care of purple cast) and maybe the shake comes from my nervous hands when handling the M8... :) I'll post something on this in a couple of weeks, so that I get time to know my M8 better.

This means I'll probably also put my beloved R-D1s on sale on this forum if I really get on with the M8. Otherwise, maybe there will be a M8 for sale...:D

BTW, I decided to move on to the M8 because of completely different reasons from yours (you're all different and the beauty of it!):

1) For wide angles (and I really like going wide) the M8 is just in another class regarding vignetting and image quality in the corners, even with lens detection off. The sensor design must be really clever on this.

2) A combined VF/RF with framelines for all the focals I tend to use is _really_ confortable. I think I'm becoming a bit "wimpy" but I just got fed up of either guesstimating framing or switch VFs all the time.

As a bonus, all my lenses now focus perfectly (even the Jupiter-9 85/2!!!) and (even more important) reliably. The only caveat is that I don't have frames for the 40/1.4 Nokton anymore (and I was getting more and more fond of it...) so it'll have to find another home...

Oh! And I'm happy to report that, altough the 28 'Cron ASPH is the better lens, (my sample of) the 28/1.9 Ultron behaves much better on the M8 than on the Epson: no veiling flare, until now. Mistery...

Rich, best of luck with your new M8!
