It appears that if you want to shoot flash you need to connect a flash via the sync port because the hot shoe isn't actually hot..right?

No, the hot-shoe is hot. Just check your shutter speeds (syncs at 1/125 or slower, I think) and your flash's trigger voltage to make sure it's compatible.

Mine is hot.

You might try a pencil eraser rub on the contact surfaces of the shoe, and on your flash.

On some cameras, the hot shoe won't work if a PC cord is also plugged in.

I don't have an "s," might check your menu closely to see if there is a flash setting option.

OK...I didn't try a flash on it, just my Paul Buff triggers (which wouldn't fire)

But I did try a cheapie set of Cowboy studio triggers and they fired, and then I tried a flash and it fired.
