So what is a Nikon M worth these days

So .... you were planning on bidding and are bummed by how high the price has risen?

I'm not sure about Ebay prices, but in Japan Nikon M synchs sell for anywhere from $1,000 to $3,000 or more.

A lotta cash in comparison to the plain jane Nikon S (essentially the same camera minus the "M" before the s/n) which sells for anywhere from $200 to $600.

Mine was $30 with the 5cm F1.4 lens. The M without Sync was $470, had a Collapsible Sonnar on it. I suspect the original buyer was annoyed that Nikon discontinued the Collapsible Nikkor.

I miss that antique store.

about 5 years ago i sold an unsynced m with 5cm f2 early for $2500
an unsynced m with 5cm 1.4 and case went for $1800+ on ebay this week
prices are down on all collectable cameras .
the ms type m at $1000 with lens on shop goodwill does not seem a bad deal
it will probably go higher at auctions end . still it does not have the value of the unsynced m
the ms is not as desirable as the earlier type camera. ---this is an opinion --- --i do like the earlier camera more .
if you are going to use the camera the nikon s or s2 is a good bet .

I bid $200 at the beginning to keep track of it. I know it's worth a lot more but have no clue as to the value. Nikon RFs are one temptation I've avoided over the years. Every once and awhile someone will post a nice S at a decent price and I get tempted but I go to the closet and fondle my IIIG.

Since I,m not a "collector" the M is not a camera I'd be interested in buying. I'm sure who ever gave Grandpa's camera away thought it was worthless.

I've put a good bit of film through my Nikon RF's. I've used the S for one or two rolls, and not the M's. The difference in handling between the S and S2 is enormous. If you want one for taking pictures, get an S2 or S3, or even S4. Prices on S4's are way down. If you do not mind the money, get an SP. Prices on users are down. The I and M's are best left for collectors. At least for what I paid for the pair of M's, I do not feel bad about picking them up for collectibles.

I guess an M with lens is worth $3,180 to someone, because that's what they bought it for. $160 handling fee on top of shipping. I bet the workers at that LA store are doing handwheels.

Either that or someone really likes the number 69 as both the camera and the lens serial numbers ends with that.

So, tell me Beemermark, if you have avoided the temptation for soooo long, why are you bidding on these worthless things? :D

Just keeping the conversation going.

I'll bid on stuff just to keep track of the auction. I bid $200 on the Nikon knowing there was no way I'd win. I thought it would maybe go to $1000 but not $3,200 or $3,300. Besides I do not see the M as a camera to use, sooner or later I'm gong to break down and buy one of the S models. After seeing the goodwill auction I've been doing some research. It looks like the S2 is the one to get. First I'd like to sell, or trade, either my M4, IIIF or IIIIG.
