I have a soft release on my M3. The biggest issue first - it looks cool!
But I have to admit it works for me. It does allow you to position your index finger better.
Go for it!

It has it's ups and downs.
It does make the button easier to press, especially when doing a button down vertical shot. But therein lies a problem. It goes off in your bag easily, and if you have a battery operated M meter, it'll depress the button in your bag without your knowledge and drain your battery completely.

Keep your money. Although, you do get the occasional cool "off the hip" shot.

NO NO NO. Learn to arch your finger and practice moving just the tip of your finger straight up and down without moving any other muscle in your hand. You don't even need a camera to practice the motion.

I love them but not the same on every camera. I used MSRs on every Bessa, LOVE THEM! Tom A ROCKS. On my Ms I used Nikon AR-9s. They just felt good. An AR-1 is on my S3 and was on my S2. Each has a different feel, just like cameras. You need to find yourself what works for you and your camera. They are very low cost so try two different ones and see what works best for you.

I bought a quick release and tried it, but personally I prefer the "arched finger" approach described by Al Kaplan.

i have tried them but as i keep my camera(s) over my shoulder(s) i found they fire off too many shots.

Not for me... But I don't usually share that opinion as it doesn't contribute anything positive to the discussion. Maybe there are others who do the same, skewing the apparent consensus.
I also don't care for the Thumbs Up or soft cases, but do like accessory grips.

As you point out, saying you don't like something can be useful if it shows people that enthusiastic reviews are not the only possibility. Some love 'em; I hate 'em.
Personally I dislike anything that makes the camera bulkier, except Leicavits/Rapidwinds, but I particularly dislike soft releases because they put the release in the 'wrong' place. After 35 years using M-series Leicas my finger 'knows' where the release is supposed to be, to the millimetre.
Somewhere I've even got the Leica adapter-cum-soft-release for using screw-mount cable releases (cup-type) on M-series Leicas (PC taper type).

I made my own and it worked great, a very nice feel to the pressure on the shutter button, and it smooths the firing action and reduces any jolts at long shutter speeds. Then I discovered the downside of it firing the shutter every time the camera was put in the bag, and the battery draining, and now it is redundant.

Al Kaplan's approach is the proper way to take a snapshots... heed his advice.
Camera enthusiasts are focused on form and feel moreover than viewfinder activity (subject matter).
It's very basic for a photographer to adapt however an enthusiast is doomed to equipment dissatisfaction.

The look? Well, I could care less what the camera looks like (if that is what you mean), but it works for me. (Been using Leica M cameras as long as Roger...)
They cost $15 dollars US, more or less...
Put it to a vote and you'd get a statistic. Some people like e'm, some don't. That's good enough for me.
Some things you just gotta try to see if you like them. Like foods.

Soft release are a good idea for your index pleasure and for longer shutter times. It is also very good at shooting blank frame too! I have three Tom's softies, two for the M4s, one for the rolleiflex (I cutted the softy for that!). It is also a good idea to remember wich film is in your leicas (I use red for positive and blue for black and white FYI)
