I use bear fat, available from muzzleloading supply houses for leather, and for llubricating patches for shooting. It has one of the highest amounts of lanolin of any natural fat. Pretty amazing stuff.

i did use the alcohol but noe the jelly...i used beeswax with lanolin and waterproofing added.
and i have to say that it worked great. my new strap is now pretty soft and the rough edged side is smoother.
i am working on my older straps now.

Off topic I know. I bought two large size wrist straps and they are indeed beautifully made, but my ugly big mitt does not comfortably fit it. I always need my other hand's assistance to get in and out. Now if there was a product to soften and stretch....

My black & grey Gordy strap came a bit stiff but carrying it around on the Canonet it's softening up nicely on it's on. I have to say the straps that came on my Bessa R & L are the most comfortable straps. I love em.

i'm normally content with waiting for nature to take is due course but i did want to speed up the process this time...possibly from being at home sick for the past 2 days and being bored...

my guess is that there are several good answers to my question...mine worked fine and i didn't have to leave the house to go shopping for anything.

Readily available and inexpensive Neat's Foot Oil from the hardware store works like a charm.

I applied one very light coat on my leather boots and it made the leather noticeably softer. Neatsfoot oil WILL change the color of the leather.

It is very easy to overdo it with neatsfoot oil to the point where it becomes too soft and malleable. Use sparingly!

I´m a very clever boy and now you have the great chance to learn from a smart man:
My leather half case for my Ricoh GXR was fine but not the way soft and used looking I want.
So after a very genius moment of thinking about the stone washed jeans I like so much, the plan was clear.
I take the case and put it with a handful of little stones in a cotton bag into my washing machine!! 😎
