My wife and I were talking about what the reaction might have been over the centuries. I can just imagine how people freaked out.
There's another total eclipse that will TN from Texas north through Illinois in a few years. I'm sure my wife would let you come stay here until I happens if we can stay in your house in Italy. You're welcomed to move in nowwe love Italy and the people are wonderful!

I'm currently taking a medication with which I can't drink, so why bother?
FWIW I made no effort to see Halley's Comet, or Kahoutek either.
Those were non-events to me as well.
The good news for you eclipse-buffs is that the one in 2024 will be twice as long - four whole minutes!

I'm back home from Fairmont, Nebraska, the home of the best total eclipse in the USA!
What a great little village in the middle of the farming nation. They welcomed the world to their little heaven-on-earth and showed what happens when people open their hearts to strangers.
People from all over the world converged on their parks and streets, they opened all their doors and restrooms to free public use. They had free breakfast at the VFW hall, hotdogs at many locations where local set up their grills on the sidewalk and cooked until it ran out. The main street was decked with Old Glory on every lamp-post, and locals were out shaking hands with visitors and asking if they needed anything, pointing out open space to relax and get ready for the coming eclipse event. Shady places, with temps in the 70's and breezes blowing.
As the blessed event neared, the clouds parted and we had a Nebraska-blue-sky unobstructed view, the crowds cheering as the sun went dark and cheering again as it peeked back out. The strange midnight at mid-day is very hard to describe.
Truly the heavens declared the Glory of God, and the sky proclaimed His handiwork!
I only took pictures of people in the town, not the sun, on color film. I'll have pics when they are developed.

I'll never forget the experience of seeing my first total solar eclipse as a schoolkid back in 1979. To date, I have observed four total eclipses (O.K. -- make that 3 1/2 -- I was clouded out in England) and on Monday, I had the pleasure of sharing this one with my two boys.
Being in the direct path of totality is something that needs to be experienced in order to truly appreciate the spectacle of the event. If you ever have the possibility to see the 2024 eclipse, try to make it happen. It is something that you will never forget.

The diamond rings in central South Carolina were specular. The crowd literally gasped and then cheered for both.
I saw the first pre-totality diamond with solar glasses and the second without. Of course when the second one flashed I immediatedly out the glasses back on.
