just got my M8...

Can't quite bring myself to sell my R-D1 - I think I prefer it... what should I do to shake off the R-D1 fascination. Tell me - what should i do to convince myself that Leica did a better job?

If you don't absolutely need the money, why not keep it? The M8 has motorized shutter wind and framelines for longer lenses, both of which are very nice in some situations; the R-D 1 has a 1:1 viewfinder and a foldable LCD, both of which are nice in other situations.

You probably own more than one pair of pants, because you need different kinds for different occasions. Cameras? Same thing.

Well maybe your pants cost $3000- 5000 a pair.

Sell it to me for a pittance. I'll give you $800. =P

Enjoy the M8! That's key to it. I have to work around one every day, and every day I want to take it home with me. I think I might borrow it sometime, but likely I'll try to find an R-D1 when it comes time for a DRF.

Oh the tragedy!!! I know what will really make you feel better: Give it to me. That's right, no $ involved. That's how you will manage to really feel good about your M8! Because you gave away the other sinful DRF that was affecting your photography mojo, consuming your skifull ability to capture snapshots of reality. Better yet, you will give it away in an act of RFF madness and compassion for a fellow RFF'er.

To show you my gratitude towards, I'll offer you for your birthday (again, notice the lack of $ involved in your incredibly generous act) a couple of spare leica batteries for your M8, if they go for less than 20$ each that is. Now that's what I call caring about not cutting short your creative flow!

Face it, can't get better than that. Personal good feeling and free batteries for upcoming birthday!

ps: PM me for my address.

If this is your only problem you must be a happy man.

Hang on to it. My M8 just packed up after 10 days. Fortunately I've still got my R-D1.

My sentiments are, enjoy the M8 but don't be blind to the fact that it's a brand-new product and evidently much of the testing that arguably should have been done by the factory is being done by the early-adopters instead. As such I would not burn my bridges behind me quite yet. I imagine that if I buy a Leica digital M (M9 or M8.2--that doesn't need IR filters) I will keep my refurb RD-1 as a backup (assuming it's still working by then!).

Sold my R-D1 right after getting my M8. I loved the R-D1, but couldn't justify having two cameras when I so badly wanted another lens. I'd love to one day have a backup for my M8, but for since i don't do photography for my living - I'd rather focus first on having the lens kit I want.
(I do have some digital canon gear which I use for landscape and macro work)

I'm keeping my R-D1 for back up and beacuse I love shooting on this camera. Both cameras have their strengths and since I can afford to keep both I'm doing just that.

I am not planning to sell my R-D1. In old film days I always had two cameras. My R-D1 pairs so nicely with the 35 lux asph, while the M8 has either the 21 Elm asph or the 28 cron on. I find the R-D1 doing much nices AWB work in artificial light than the M8 does. I hope the WB of the M8 will improve with firmware, as the R-D1 was improved. Besides, I think the R-D1 is a design landmark and for that I believe it will regain some price in the used market in the far future. The R-D1 seems to deserve a shelf in the MOMA design museum much more than the M8 does. some might not care about such things obviously, but I do.
BTW, for low light, I still find my R-D1 with the 35 lux asph to come very close to my 5D even in terms of print size. Somehow, I still did not manage to get similar results with my M8. I really hope that Leica will do what Epson did with their firmware upgrade. I believe that the R-D1, at 1600iso after upgrade is better than what it was at 800 before. There is no reason why Leica will not be able to achive that given the pixel size of the M8 and the fact that it is a CCD, rather than a Cmos.

I sold my RD-1 and it was mainly because I have so much invested in DSLR and Canon L lenses that I just used the DSLR more - BUT

I've been bitten hard by the rangefinder bug and I opened an account the other day with a view to saving up for an M8. It will probably be a fair while before I have the money and maybe a new model will be out by then.

Never own one, although temped, I just could not bring myself to buy
a digital camera with a gas gauge. A digital camera with analog meters
to me, always looked like it came out of a 50,s Flash Gordon movie.

Now, why would that be a bad thing...?

I mean Flash had it goin' on!

The Analogue meters are pretty cool- as someone said this camera belongs in the MOMA design museum. I predict of the current batch of digi cams, only the R-D1 and perhaps a few others will one day be viewed as "classic" among collectors.

Come to think of it, Flash had it goin' on in the 30's, I think...

I gave my RD-1 away (to my dad for a 75th b-day gift). Sadky, the M8 is now gone too (in for repairs). The sader fact is the RD-1 for all the talk about bad support never had the problems the M8 has. The RD-1 had many advantages to the M8 in functionality and the intuitive nature of the controls. The M8 had the edge (or so we thougt) in that it was backed by Leica. But the Rd-1 has won on the "design" front and quality front.

my dad loves it. If he didn't I would want it back.
