Joe, in 1976 I bought a 7s with the 1.2 (yeah, shoulda kept it) and I was amazed by
the quality of the central portion of the image even wide open. I used to shoot it
with K25 so I could use it wide whenever possible. The edges didn't do very well
until f/4, but that was easy to work around. I have a window light shot of a friend
taken at 1/125 @ 1.2 on K25, and with a 22x loupe you can count eyelashes--I never would have believed it.
The contrast of the 1.2 is slightly higher than the Noctilux f/1, but the 'lux had cleaner edges. Overall, I preferred the look of the Canon. Regrettably, that's the only
Canon RF lens I've ever shot with.

the Canon f1.2 was not highly thought of in the years gone by, lukewarm comments by people like Peter Dechert in his book. for example. but almost every photo taken by it seems very pleasing to my eye. I know DDD like it in the late 1950s , used it on his signiture M3/MP Leica.

I like my own Canon 50 1.2; it's the one that's mounted often on my Bessa-R. Don't have any samples to share right now since I got it cleaned. I like the blur of it wide open; very...of its own.
Many people don't like it because it's "not sharp". Bah.

My experience with one was that is had awful barrel distorsion up close (see photo, I can garantee you that windows was straight) and was quite hard to focus right. It can be the lens I had, and not a general condition.
Ps: contrast in this shoot is tricky since I underexposed 1 stop (unintentional) although it is a low contrast lens.

Lear, that is a nice photo despite the fact that the window is arched.
I think too often we look for super crisp photos, and there is a lot of great things that I see when I shoot with a Summicron. But I like lenses with "character" too. The Canon 50/1.2 creates pleasing images. It seems to have unique qualities.

The Canon 50/1.2 is by far my favorite 50. Two pics attached, the kid playing baseball was taken at F1.6 (minor cropping) and the gals looking at the Diego Rivera fresco at the Detroit Institute of Arts is at F1.4 (minor cropping).

it's easy to use, not nearly the behemoth it looks like in pics. i found it easy to focus on the m3 and the zi.
it seems sharp. most of the stuff i shot was in poor light at slow speeds and there was alot of motion blur and likely user motion as well.
the shots in better light look good to me.
before any final verdict though i need a few more rolls with it.

Nice shots; I found it to be a good, fast lens. Much lighter than the 50/0.95.
Found it quite capable of handling color as well.

Sorry to monopolize this thread, but I'm a big fan of the Canon 50/1.2. One more pic and then I go offline to spend the day tearing out kitchen countertops.
Sigh.

In the original post, second photo, what's going on with the word "Zippo"? Is the apparent flaring around the word the way the display stand was, or is it really some kind of flare?

I'll hopefully be getting to post some of my test shots this evening with the same lens..
two 50/1.2's North of the 49th 🙂....
And, as I have all three of the Canon 50's (not the TV 0.95 lens) I did sort of a "non scientific" bokeh test with all of them, wide open, at 1.4 and at 2.0.
Look forward to more from this lens 🙂
