some adapter use questions

just needing to check out a couple of things...

i recently bought an oly 4/3 macro lens, the 35, along with a lumix 4/3>m4/3 adapter...everything fits nicely and i can use manual focus with the magnified view.
just checking...the auto focus is not supposed to work with this set up, right?

second question...

i also recently bought a cheap adapter for m mount lenses to fit onto the g1. it fits great and i can easily mount my m mount lenses on the m4/3 g1.

but it's only manual focus and there is no magnified view and it focusses no matter where the afs/afc/mf is set to. is this the way it's supposed to work?

also, on aperture priority, no f value shows up but the shutter speed does change when i change f values...normal?

should i be using it on another, better setting other than 'a'?

I'll ask a second question:
When using legacy lenses I believe the camera is set on aperture priority and manually focused. I have Canon EF glass I'd like to use (with adapter) but there is no manual aperture setting, it's set in the camera. Is there a remedy for this?

Also, I have some OM glass which has manual aperture settings. That seems pretty cut and dried but I read someplace that the adapters keep the blades wide open, as on an OM, but does not release them when the shutter is tripped, as on the OM.

M glass seems the best choice but I have none.

Anyone wanna help me or Joe?

Legacy glass will not activate the aperture on these cameras.
I use A mode. The meter will read the light and adjust the shutter to the proper speed for exposure.
The Canon EF glass will only shoot wide open.

Joe, you should be able to get the MF magnifier to work. Make sure you have set that option in the menu.

I don't remember the G1 but on the G2 ya just hit the wheel and it comes on/off.

That's what I figured, M4streetshooter, I guess I will stick with m4/3 lenses and use LTM/M lenses when I want to play. Thanks, you saved me some money.

I am settled in dedicated lenses for this format. Lazy in my old age, I like AF and the things ya get with dedicated stuff.

I guess a few ND filters would help but that's extra glass out front.
I also agree that AF is much better with my 75 yrs old eyes.

One more reason to prefer Nikon over Canon 😉

L glass won't work since the aperture on the modern Canon mount is electronically-controlled, while on the Nikon F mount, the aperture is mechanically-controlled (yes, even the G lenses)

What that means is lots of fun using F-mount (and M-mount) lenses with adapters on my NEX5. 😀

BTW, with legacy lenses the NEX5, it's manual focus only, no aperture display (but the LCD brightens/darkens when you adjust the aperture ring), magnifier works.

I have Canon FD glass - just set the aperture on the lens, set the camera for aperture priority, and the Olympus Pen does the rest. PLUS, most FD lenses are dirt cheap. Another reason I love Canon over Nikon.

Canon FL lenses are even easier to use- the lens has a manual aperture mode.

I've never handled a Panasonic u4/3, but my EP2 is easy to use in manual focus mode. Press a button to toggle magnified mode on and off.

On the G1, when you use a manual lens, you set the camera to "Shoot w/o lens" and just leave it there even for m4/3 AF lenses...
Page 5 I believe on the "Custom" menu

When you turn the camera on, you use the "<" arrow of the 4 way and you will have a 10x or 14x view that can moved around if you like. Well, you can hit the "<" two times and go right to the centered 10x, or move it around, to get 14x, use the control wheel. And then hit "<" Again to go to the 14x view.

this has me wandering about using a Panasonic 14-50 f/2.8 - 3.5 Vario Elmarit on the G1.. A 4/3 lens. hummmm, MF only I guess :bang:
really would like native 14-45/50 f/2.8 - 3.5 m4/3 with all the benefits of AF and such. I hope Photokina has a surprise for us, with THAT lens in m4/3 🙂

i originally wanted to go this route - the lens has a super reputation - but stopped because the original panasonic and olympus full-featured adapters are so expensive in europe. according to my reading, AF etc is possible with the more expensive adapters (especially the Panasonic original), but NOT possible with some of the $60 adapters which just mechanically connect the 4/3 to M4/3 flanges.

Hmm, lotsa stuff here.

1. Joe, are you all squared away? Adapter/MF are working for ya? The 35 macro won't AF on G1/GH1/GF1, but should on G10/G2 and on all Oly EP. Legacy MF lenses on adapters can't communicate aperture to body, so no aperture will appear on screen or in exif. But they will meter fine in A or M modes.
2. There is a complex workaround for setting aperture on Canon EF lenses. Google is your friend. I think you set the aperture on a Canon body, hit DOF preview, then turn camera off and remove lens. This leaves lens at the stopped-down aperture. Then attach lens to adapter and adapter to m4/3. A pain, I suppose, but better than impossible.
3. Leica 14-50 will not AF on G1/GH1/GF1, will AF on G10/G2 and all Oly bodies. AF will be slower than a native m4/3 lens.
4. Even cheap adapters will stopdown aperture on FD/OM lenses. Aperture is set with the aperture ring, in stopdown mode. Aperture will close when you move ring to smaller fstops. The aperture will not reopen until you turn the ring wideopen.
5. Leica glass is not necessarily the best for m4/3, depends on the focal length and your needs. The fun part is there is an adapter for almost every lensmount on the planet, and there are lots of affordable legacy lenses to play with.
