finally was able to hit the darkroom last night and print..five hours later here's what i came out with...

thoughts? comments? it took me about 20 sheets to get that picture of my brother with the flag outside to that point..could use a little bit more work, but i'm pretty pleased with it...

it's a good example of what digital can't do yet...get all the detail inside and the outside...it was shot with neopan 1600 and the outside looked pretty dense on the neg, but it had enough detail that it could be printed down...

I feel awkward commenting on other's photographs other than "It works for me, or not." But since you asked, and it's only my opinion, I'd like the shot of your soldier brother with the flag outside in the background better with the right-hand side of the print cropped much closer to your brother. I know it breaks the rule of giving your subject space to look into, but after a certain point (once you can follow alll the rules) you have to try breaking the rules. 🙂

But then again, you may have chosen to include that space to provide a context of "your parent's house". There may even be a picture of your father (for instance) on that shelf that you want to include.

Critiquing pictures is almost a fool's game.

thanks Franks...yes i know...i just feel like i need some feedback sometimes...i work in a vacuum a lot of the time, where i don't know if my images are getting any better, so i need to hear other voices and critiques

Funny, but I had an opposite thought. I'd have cropped the left side up to the edge of the flat itself. For me that would have tightened up the relation b/w your brother in uniform and the flag and heightened the presentation of the "home space" on the right. More tension in the photo: personal/home vs patriotism/country. It's contrastively lighted, which to me represents more not less tension, too.

I'm no critic. I just like the photo and would try it several different ways.

I like the tighter crop, too. Overall, a very nice image.

I thought that the photo of the woman with the shaved head was nice, but you seem to have lost some detail on the forehead. Pwehaps a little less development time? Of course, it might just be my monitor.

Overall, an evening well spent. Nice work!

Personally I like the "look" of the pictures, very contrasty but it seems to me the highlights may be blown on a couple. Are they all Neopan 1600? I like that film a lot - what was the developer you used?

Like the last one - nice feel to it. Agree with above comments about the blown highlights except the last pic where I think it works. I especially agree w/ Frank's comments about critiquing photos.
