One of my favourite aspects of RFF is the way camera fondling and photography are not mutually exclusive here. The gallery is full of amazing pictures, loads of them taken by people who will just as happily discuss nuts and bolts as creative decisions.

So, to approach the point - since I started posting pictures I have been trying to predict which ones of mine will attract lots of viewings and favourable comments. Sometimes I can be spot on but more interestingly I can be totally wrong. Recently, I have been cutting down the number of images in my gallery and I sometimes look carefully at the ones with few viewings and think "no - I'm leaving it there, I'm fond of that picture even if only 3 people looked at it in 6 months".

Does anyone else have this experience?

Does the collective mind of RFF (if there is one) have a preference for certain types of pictures? Or is there an element of luck - should you post pictures when the USA is awake, for example?

Would anyone care to join this ramble?

Yep - definitely!

I think you are right. Although I won't attempt to describe a general rule, I think there is a type of shot that is "typical" of photos poipular here, which is different from what might be more typical on other forums.

I don't upload as much as I should, as I get so busy-but I have found a strong correlation between pictures that my wife tells me are composed well and are interesting, and # of views. I intend to use this phenomenon to teach myself more about composition.

For a lot of views, a picture of a pretty woman ALWAYS gets attention!

I agree that the time you upload has a lot to do with how many times your pics are viewed.
I also think that quantity helps (mainly for others). It seems there is always someone right behind you; moving your pics down the line pretty quickly.
I've been looking at the gallery using the feature to allow you to see everything that was uploaded for the entire day. That way I don't miss too much.
Viewing a picture from a thumbnail size can also be misleading for those looking. I'm sure a lot of pictures were not looked at because the thumbnail did not catch our eye, but the picture may have been awesome. And of course there are those awesome looking thumbnails that turned out to be not so awesome.

Very interesting thread. I often think the same thing about pictures i.e., what attracts people to look. In the end, I don't let others judge my work. It's a personal thing, and if a picture appeals to you, it will never matter what others say.

What I can say for sure is that the gallery on RFF tends to have a quality far superior artistically and aesthetically than other online galleries in my opinion.

Thanks Bill! Much appreciated. For me I think that I've noticed most views of pictures with people (esp. street photography), a love of black and white over colour (me too) and a leaning towards classic styles from the golden era of rangefinder photography (1925 to 1960?). There doesn't seem to be a mass of fine art, landscape, nude, architecture or studio work by comparison.

Must say I agree with that - it's what started me thinking.

There have been times when comments have shown that I have seen the same idea in the picture as most viewers here and times when whatever appealed to me has shot past everyone else. Who is to say who is right and wrong?

I've only uploaded a few photo's I've taken recently. Only the better of my RF photo's. I used to have a gallery and upload everything and anything. It looked awful. I agree that timing seems to be the main factor in viewing/comment levels

I have the same experience and, for me, it's the funny thing of posting pictures: see how other people see your shot. I use the word see and not judge because I never felt to be judged by another RFF member, I always received polite comments (and that's why I feel comfortable when I post some shot of mine).

It happened to me too, I posted some photo I like (I wouldn't post if I didn't) which collected less views than expected and less than others shots I posted but loved less.

Timing is important but in order to "recent studies" 😀 if you post your photos in the morning (UE time) they will last long in the gallery but there are a few members on line, so, sometimes it's better to post on the "rush hour" so, even though the pic doesn't stay long in the Gallery, there will be many members more.

I didn't noticed a particular interest among different subjects except b/w versus color.

Another funny question I asked myself noticing that if you receive a comment you'll easily receive another one, what I mean is:
is it easier to receive the second comment than the first? 😕

Anyway: the Gallery IMO is a nice way to share something I like with other people and a place where I can get a lot of insipiration thanks to many good RFF . 🙂 members.

Bye
Nico

P.S. sorry for my poor english
