The best camera is one that still works!
My current favorite on the III is a collapsible summicron. If you don't get one in collectors condition, they aren't too expensive. I like collapsibles on my III since they (summicron and summar) are also light weight.
For another piece of stupidity on my part ... I had a (slightly rough) collapsable Summicron in LTM and gave it away!
OMG!
Okay- Keith, back to your D700.
Did you at least give it away with the M8?

Or better still hit myself with the Nikon!
Even worse Brian I gave it to Ash ... remember Ash?
The black f1.8 on eBay interests me ... he's asking close to $200.00 and I'm thinking maybe an offer of $150.00? He can anly say no I guess!
Would it be worth that?
Ash had a Summitar! What were you thinking giving a Summicron to him!
$150 for the Canon 50/1.8 is a good price for one with excellent glass.
You could also try a "want to Buy" ad here. They are free.

Um. Anyone want to give me a lens? I promise to make good use of it.
What sort of shenanigans did I miss out on by finding RFF so recently?!
I like the J8. The I64 is promising but I haven't gotten around to reshimming it yet.

It was a long time ago and I had no concept that it was actually a decent lens ... I just thought it was the dirty ugly piece of crap that came on the screwmount I'd just bought off eBay.

I will never sell my Canon 50/1.4. If and when I get Barnack, however, I'll put something smaller and lighter on it. A big lens light that seems to defeat the purpose of using a tiny body. The J8 is very nice. My Summaron 35/3.5 won't take up much room and if I were going to get a 50, I'd try a cheap, user Elmar. Curious, Keith about what you finally decide. If I find myself not broke in the near future, this is something I've been musing about doing, too.
Found an old thread on size of Canon lenses.

My M5s need red dots!
Best of luck with the purchase, Keith... You may have found the holy grail: affordable lens for Leica.

Turn down the GAS. What about using the 50/1.2 you already have?

You can't be serious ... have you seen what a poor little Leica II looks like attached to a Canon 50mm f1.2?
It's not a pretty sight ... and the viewfinder becomes completely useless!

What about the Nikon screw-mount 50's?

Cheap compared to a Summilux, CV 35/1.2, M8, etc.

It probably looks something like this:
You wanted cheap and faster - can't get much cheaper of faster than this!

The chrome Canon 50/1.8 and the Nokton 50/1.5 can be great options for fast 50s, having a more classic look or a more modern look.
