something I made for my lenses so I don't burn a hole in the curtains

If I have to walk outside in a sunny day with any of my Leicas, I just close the lens. I also make sure the camera moves a little. As long as the camera moves and the lens is closed, I'm more or less protected from burning a hole in my shutter curtains.

Of course, if I have a lens cap, I use it. :)

Looks a bit like a shower cap. One very practical use for your invention, other than keeping the sun from burning a hole in your shutter (which is very useful in and of itself) is that you're unlikely to be taking any shots w/ your "lens cap" on. Worth it just for that feature.

You know, not that long ago someone made millions of dollars by putting a plain 'ol rock in a box and selling it as a Pet Rock. You might have another winner here.

Actually, a lens that's closed down all the way will probably burn a hole in a shutter quicker than one that's wide open. Focused light and all that.

a pair of baby socks might work. personally I don't like extra stuff. the hand method always worked for me.

It also helps avoid holes if, when out on a sunny day, you do not leave your lens focused at infinity if it happens to stare at the sun.
