something on lens-element (1961 rigid summicron)

the round thing is on one of the last elements.
doesn't look like fungus.
maybe haze?
it's only visible with a flashlight.

I had an aperture-shaped circle similar to this on an old Nikon 35/1.4 AIS lens. Is the lens a recent acquisition? It's possible it was sitting with the aperture blades dialed into a specific setting for quite some time. (mine was in a box sitting for about 5-7 years)

The haze on my lens went away after I left it in the sun for about 2 days. Might be worth a shot.
 
Could be haze or separation. Can you open and close the aperture and see how close to the aperture it is ?

If it's haze directly behind the aperture, it's easy to clean.
 
I'm thinking separation, though in the 2 or 3 I have seen, the separation was nearer the outer edge of the elements.

Unfortunately it's not directy behind the aperture. at least not as far as i can recognize it.

Am I right that seperation would not be reparable?
Just bought the lens a few days ago.
I'm thinking about sending the lens to leica (I live in germany), but if it's really seperation i might try to give it back to the seller.

Yes just bought it and the ring seems to be the exact diameter as f5.6.

There are three elements behind the aperture, a doublet first, then the rear element.

Based on your visual inspection, I am wildly guessing it is indeed separation of the doublet. That can be fixed by one of the gurus (John@focalpoint, for instance), but is not cheap. Depending how much you paid for the lens it might not be worth it. I were you, if I had paid US 300 or less, and the lens is clean, I would consider having it fixed. If you paid more, I would send it back.

So, just had a closer look.
The spot/ring is definetly not on the rear-element. I think it's on the outside on the one after that.
It looks concaved towards the rear-element.
Based on this (http://www.imx.nl/photo/leica/lenses/lenses/page92_files/page92_3.jpeg) seperation of the doublet would "look concaved" towards the aperture blades and not the rear element.
Or am I wrong with my conclusion?

Here is the diagram. Hope this helps. Note that you can use a loupe to look at element surfaces through the lens if that makes sense.

Hi Johnny,

should be pretty easy to get access to that lens surface. (a) remove the optical from the focus barrel (simply unscrews, if you grab the lens around the front). (b) with a lens spanner, open the rear span ring, remove the element. Remember in which direction the rear element sits in the lens. Clean the dirty surface with a very soft cloth and some isopropanol. Coatings on the early Summicrons are very soft and easily scratched.

If indeed it is the surface you are pointing out, having it cleaned professionally shouldn't be expensive either. You could call Sherry Krauter, for instance, and ask.

thanks for the info.
though I don't have a lens spanner I just tried to unsrew the front group with moderate force but it didn't work. not a bit.
where do I have to grab? on the very front where the lens hood clicks in?
or below on the aperture-ring?
may it be that this is only working with the DR-version of the lens?
 
It works with both, in fact the lens heads are interchangable, and both can be used on Visoflex, for instance. But sometimes they are tight. Grab below the aperture ring.

BELOW the aperture-ring would mean the "not grabable part of the aperture ring" or the focus ring?

Just tried it by grabbing the front-thing and again by grabbing the aperture-ring.
won't unscrew.
might be a sign that I better shouldnt do that. :)
will send it in to leica or some repair-guy in germany.
