Something small, something quiet...

Just to add, I'm a female with smaller hands... I've fiddled with an M6 before and did not think it was big or small for my personal tastes.

Yep. Small it is not. Pretty much the size of a normal Leica 🙂

Wow, sounds like there are a lot of quiet little cameras out there for me to find. Thank you. 🙂

Yashica 35CC
Vivitar 35ES
Konica Auto S3
Revue 400ES
Minolta Hi-Matic 7s-II

all small, very silent and approx 40mm 1.7 lens. The Auto S3 and the 400ES are flash-matic, when the standard GN14 flash is mounted, they will vary aperture based on set distance, very neat. Might be more that have this, not sure there.

Inconspicuous, people tend to think you got the kids-play vintage camera with you, no one will take you serious when you put the lens in their face! Until they see results, that is...

...The AF runs circles around your M2 when only a 35mm lens is needed, in particular when focusing is difficult, or quiet operation is important. ...

I shot my Hexar at the medieval caves in Valkenburg, which have extensive murals made in charcoal and even scupltures in the sandstone rock. Waited until the guide and group were out of the way, focused in pitch black and fired. The Hexar has infrared focus. This is a shot of the result, depicting a mural on the royal family, some 120 years old I guess.

Shot on Kodak E100G, approx. f5.6 and shutter 1/30th I suppose.

Focus is impeccable, it is a 290-step infrared guided focusing system. Can't be beat.

Forget about TLRs, they are 120 film cameras...and big enough!
And the Lynx as the Electro GSN are even bigger than Leicas...
As I have already mentioned in another thread:

Every RFF member should have an Olympus RC!

From some 2 dozen RCs that passed my hands, only one had an aperture problem. All the others were aible to take excellent pics right out of the box.
All were in need for new seals, on some I had to solve electric contact problems, some need cleaning the finder, easy fix (check Rick Oleson).
Read what Mr. Gandy wrote about the RC:

Yes it does... only one question left really... Is it true that the silver Hexar's (AF) do NOT have the silent mode? That would limit me to find a black one I suppose...

So, I've considered getting an M6 a couple months back and decided against it after realizing it's actually quite difficult for me to put a roll of film into it... :-( I just started a personal project and am beginning to understand why people prefer to have smaller, quieter cameras for certain types of work.

I would like to find something with a light meter, fairly light weight and compact, with a bright viewfinder, and as quiet as possible. I don't mind if it runs off of batteries. I'll be working in very dim light at times and would probably need to have fast glass. Can anyone suggest anything? I've tried using my Olympus XA, but it's almost too small and I have a hard time focusing in the tiny focusing patch.

Any suggestions or opinions would be greatly appreciated. I also considered using a beat up film SLR, but the focusing in dim light has also given me problems.

Thanks!

i would use a practise roll of film.
the m6 might be worth another try.

It's in the text which models do have the silent mode.

Programming the Silent Mode into the camera is as simple as milk. There's an extensive thread on Photo.net showing the commands and button pushes to do it. I have done it at least two dozen times (used to sell Hexars on evilbay) and it never missed. I'll do it for you if you're uncertain, it's a ten-minute job, so same day turnaround. No extra charge, just shipping. PM me anytime when needed, I'll provide references for your ease of mind.

Yashica 35CC

Yashica 35CC

I'm currently dying for a small available light camera with a fast 35mm lens - the Yashica 35CC with a 35/1.8 lens would be nice otherwise, but the meter only goes up to ISO500. I wonder if it could be hacked somehow and how hard that would be? I would like to go at least up to 3200..

I'll go along with a couple of recommendations already suggested. The Hexar AF is a good choice with super fast focusing and a Leica quality lens. Very quiet in the normal mode but the stealth mode makes it almost silent. I own the Hexar Silver with the stealth mode update and it has produced super shots. That said, I'm considering selling mine as I find it's not getting the use it deserves. It's been a while since I shot any film.
The other suggestion of the Minolta CLE is a good choice if you want small and compact. This of course gives you the choice of other lenses. The shutter is quiet though reliant on batteries. Not too much of a hardship as it takes easily available SR44 cells. I use my CLE with a CV25/4P and 40mm Rokkor.
