I see this kind of comment often about non-DSLR cameras. Didn't people take great pictures of sports before autofocus? Couldn't they do the same now?
...and birds need DSLR autofocus? I guess someone will have to break the news to Douglas Herr, because he seems to have not gotten the memo.
I shoot soccer with an RTS III and manual focus Zeiss 100-300mm and it isn't easy. My 1DMKIII and equivalent autofocus works much better and I bet a modern 1D is better yet. I know very little about birds, but other than sitting on a branch, or hovering, they can certainly move quickly.
So, if someone wants the best tool for fast moving sports, I don't think that we are yet considering mirrorless cameras. That will probably change over the next five years, or less.

OK the leaked photo looks much more handle-able than the sketch from the other day.
Seeing that Contax insignia makes me nostalgic!
I wish Contax/Kyrosera?Yashica stayed in the Camera Game.
Imaging the models that would have evolved from the Contax N- digital, G-series and T3!

Given that in the last week or so rumor sites have said certain things that have at least gotten my interest
- using RX family menu setup not dumb'd down Nex one
- the dslr like hump is because they need the space for the Olympus ibis hw
- evf maybe the one used on the omd em1
- there higher mp sensor model may not have AA filter
- even w/ the dslr vf hump, it is no bigger then a m6
I think it will be interesting to c how well this camera will do w/ various legacy lenses, given the nex7 was not good w/ wide angle rf lenses compared to any of the 16mp sensor cameras like the nex5n or nex6.
Can't wait for the pics from u guys

Still not sure if I will ever get one...

Yep could not agree more. I really loved the look from the contax g lenses better than my Leica ones mostly.
I also wish the Konica rf was still around and there was a digital version. I have used Konica rf and contax g lenses. They are every bit as good IMHO as the Leica glass I have. I know there are a lot of folks who would disagree, but it is my MHO.

Not so bad here... I'd use that thing.

Dayyyummm. I love the look of it. Its ugly in a really nice industrial way - like the pentax LX or the nikon f3. It looks like a tool, not a toy.
The only thing that could hold this camera back is the lenses. They are all slowish and Sony has been as good as useless in the past with lenses. They should just subcontract zeiss to make the entire lineup for this camera and not even bother with their sony G branded stuff.
edit: they really could have stretched just a little bit further and made that 35mm an f2 lens. Look how tiny that front element is! protecting the rx1 are we sony?

APO Summicron - you mean the lens that costs 8000 USD and that the Leica is taking back for complete rebuild due to the poor constructions?
LOL.
Leica has to re-tune these lenses precisely because they are of such insanely good optical performance. The apo-summicron can best so-called high performance SLR 50mm primes (50mm makro-planar, Nikon 50mm f1.4G) at almost all aspects. Wide open sharpness on the Leica is comparable to these at around f4.
Yes, there's the unfortunate flare problem, but all brands mess up releases. Apple does this with around a third of their products. The oil spraying D600? Fuji's SAB? Yet Leica, who always seems ready to stand behind their products, also seems to get the most blame. I for one will NEVER go back to DSLR for 50mm after using a 50mm Summilux ASPH. Canon and Nikon can't even do better than this design after an entire decade, I'll bet on two more for them to build anything as good as Leica's latest and greatest.

The APO-summicron, which I've shot with in HK, is a fantansic lens regardless of how it reacts to flare. Optical quality is without rival among SLR glass, and there is noticeable improvement over the Summilux ASPH on an Monochrome.
Implying that it (and the 35FLE) is overpriced is much too true a statement. But nobody who's extensively used these lens will claim that they are not much of an improvement over Canon and Nikon. I used to own a 35mm f1.4L and a 50mm f1.4 USM, and subsequently sold both after acquiring the Leica equivalents.

Well, as a dyed in the wool Leicaphile since the mid '60s, my first non p&s digital camera has been a Nex 6. Had it six weeks now. M6TTL resting in its box.
OK so it isn't FF but it sort of feels like an LTM camera and has renewed my enthusiasm no end. I'm rushing around like a child taking pictures for the hell of it! It is a bit like getting your first 35mm camera in an age when you were used to 120 or 620!
I've got over all that brouhaha about crop. Lenses? LTM, M and R, from 21 to 560. (Forget 'C' mount). Favourites at the moment? 60 mm Macro Elmarit R and 35 2.8 Summaron.
By comparison this new camera looks like a clunky SLR. One man's meat...
...and maybe finally now that I am well and truly in my 60s I have got over all that 'brand' crap...I've bought a Sony and I drive a Skoda!

I think it's 'bordering on' ugly. Sorta like the newest Olympus. In fact, it looks decidedly UN-designed. Like the Engineers said, "here's what you have to work with," and they just cobbled together those disparate components. Oh, well. It's not so ugly that i wouldn't own one, but there isn't any 'cool factor' there, other than what it is, which is pretty fantastic.
I still don't like EVFs, but i'm hoping this one is leagues better than the ones i've seen in the past.

yup, no cool factor. i'm sure we'll start hearing from the usual suspects about why it's really worth being excited about, for obvious reasons. it would take some doing to reignite my interest.

Well, I am a bit excited about it. I don't think it looks soo bad. Nothing some black tape over the SONY logo can't fix. I don't care where the EVF is. Looking forward to when samples with M lenses start trickling in. I would guess that Leica will answer with a similar body without an RF fairly soon. Although I doubt they would match the 36mp. But that's only a guess.
Owning a Monochrom, I do need color sometimes and that gap has been filled with the Xpro. At least there is another FF option that is not the 240 now. I know it's not the same shooting experience....but the A7r would be fine in the studio.

The original comment was that there are SLR lenses that can match the IQ of the best Leica glass. I pointed out that this was false, and when offered the opportunity to defend the original point, the author of said point brought up more irrelevant nonsense with respect to build quality and price, neither of which are relevant with respect to absolute image quality (with the possible exception of the flare issue with the APO-Summicron 50 ASPH, which I believe Leica is repairing free of charge).
In short, the author couldn't defend his original (ignorant) point, so he began to obfuscate.

The Leica M9 is a very elegant looking camera.
I am tired of chasing "the latest" developments.

Some of you sound like you have already seen it in person, held it, and tried it for days, making judgment on it already. So what if the EVF is not on the side? I think that's uncomfortable for the majority of folks who are not RF users.
Here's a size comparison, as you can see, definitely not the size of a DSLR or even an SLR (NOT even a Pentax MX or LX).

The Zeiss 55/1.4 would be, based on MTF alone, be as good as the APO Summicron for half the price, and the Sigma 35/1.4 is a pretty good performer, maybe not outperform, but is like 1/5 the price?Sorry, but this is just false.
First off, hyperbole doesn't help your argument. What was the state of the art sensor in 1993? Do you really think the Leica M 240 is on par with that?!?
Second, show me an SLR 35mm that outperforms the 35 ASPH FLE. Forget about price; just show me one. Or a 50 that outperforms the APO-Summicron ASPH.
In my opinion, Leica places a huge priority on small size, and thus has to resort to designs that rely on very small tolerances, which inevitably lead to high prices.
But since, most Leica-diehards spend a goodly amount of time complaining about size, I suppose they have to be willing to fork out for the high prices.
Ultimately though, does one need such high MTF/resolution curves to make a good picture?
I just can't get excited over it.

I've been using a NEX-7 for a bit over a year now, long enough to get used to a WYSIWYG EVF, focus peaking, a big buffer, and soft controls that operate in thirds of a stop. I have no remaining attachment to the rangefinder method. The A7 isn't cute or cool, but for me, it's what's inside that counts. If the A7 is as responsive as the NEX-7/6, I'll be all over it. At this point, there's nothing I need that the NEX-7 doesn't do, but I'm going to have a hard time passing up a tiny full-frame body that I can use with my existing lenses for that price.
Sony continues to be disruptive. They want the market badly. Competition is a great thing.

I might actually get this instead of saving for an M9, let alone an M 240, which I'll never be able to afford. I might actually hold back buying anything new until sometime next year when the a7 prices are down a little.
I hope to get a chance to play with it during PPE, and if it doesn't turn out to be only half of what it promises to be, then my money is down on this one.
