Has the firmware been updated to fix the sluggish front wheel action when setting f stops?

That's a nice bit of good news, Joe!
Did your camera ship with an updated firmware already on it? Maybe the issue was solved before your unit shipped, and presumably will be on the one I'll be receiving soon.
Earlier reviews indicated a certain slop or disconnect between the front ring and the graphic of the aperture stops displayed in the back (see here for instance http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wX_lcBgYmjg, at the 3 minute mark). Hopefully it was an issue only on early samples.

ooops! This review is from 9/26 and it seems like the unit under consideration still had the sloppy ring problem.
I checked on Sony's site and could not see any new firmware posting so I'm not sure why users are having different experiences with he interface.

When twisting the control ring it didn’t matter if you twisted it fast or slow, to me the ring would move through the zoom or whatever setting you have it on at the same speed. For example on various mice the trackball or scroll bar will sense acceleration. In real life usage if you twist from point A to B at a slow pace the change should be slow and specific, where a quick acceleration from A to B would jump much quicker because it would sense your urgency. The camera should allow you to twist fast to get to a desired point and then sense when you slow down to specify your final precise point. I found myself towards the end of the trial period using the wheel on the back of the camera just because it went faster than the control ring as well as it was easier to make compete rotations with it.

the back wheel is more precise than the ring...i turn things like the ring slowly though and i would not characterize it as sloppy.

I'm having issues with the "Sony Image Data Suite" and can't process any RX100 RAW images. I can load/view the images on " Sony's Image Data Light Box" but when I try to convert the preview to a RAW image I get "unknown error occurred" . I just noticed that the RX100 files are in a "ARW" format and not a RAW format? It looks like I may be able to convert the ARW format to a TIFF and save the file but I can't do any processing before I save it as a TIFF.
I have the latest downloadable version of the software and I'm running it on the latest Mac OS.
Any thoughts?

Still trying to figure out what feature to use the front ring for. Thus far I've left it on "standard". I like the feel/dampning of it, but I wish it had detents for use with aperture. In addition, it would be great for manual focusing, but I'm too dependent on a distance scale, which this p&s doesn't have.
Maybe they can put one in the next firmware (if that's even possible).

I have never used Sony SW. But since u have a raw file as source shouldn't the output be something like tiff or dng?
If u are a LR user, there is a beta download on adobe site that supports rx100. If u are an aperture user like me out of luck in terms of direct support. But on Mac there is RPP. Use it as your raw to tiff converter. There is a good writeup in the Ricoh gxr forum about it and on the Fuji xp1 forum.

.ARW is sony's raw format extension, A=Alpha RW=raw, Nikon use .NEF, Canon .CR2 or .CRW, they're all different and proprietary unless .DNG like Leica, Pentax and Ricoh use which is Adobe's "open" format.

i have mine set for shutter speed, for long exposures when I don't need to do anything critically fast or whatever. Oh, and for manual video focus, on a tripod. Artsy 🙂
I think the designers were going for a very liquid-y feel, not anything remotely resembling reality. I like it.

I think you missed the point of the post. RedLion wanted to explore how hard he could push the RAW file. I don't think he was necessarily trying to create the most visually pleasing image.
