I have an R-D1. The lenses I've used with it are:
Screwmount:
Summar
50mm Summicron
35mm Summaron
90mm Elmar
I have two Leica adapters and have tried 2 Voight and one other Leica adapter in the stores

M Mount:
Noctilux
50mm Summilux
35mm Summilux
90mm Elmarit

When I use any of the M lenses they focus fine. More or less where you place it. Even the Noct to a large extent. And the error are random. When I use any of the screws with any of the adapters they come in consistently out of focus. And the error is the same. Irregardless of the screw lens or mount. If I focus the lens just a bit further out they come into focus! I'm thinking there is something with the way Epson designed the cam or whatever. It's not the lenses nor the adapers nor my focusing style! Strange, no?

And FWIW, yes, I have read this post and I dont think that's my problem. I think it on the design of the camera...

But at least it works well with M mount lenses...

Russell,
I agree with JLW that there are some differences in adapters. I have also have two VC & two Leica adapters and by experimentation I have matched and dedicated an adapter to each lens to achieve best focus without modifying the adapters.

That said focus was not that much off without this (just fine tuning)and too many people here are using screw lenses with adapters successfully for it to be a design rather than a specific camera issue. Try to try another R-D1 body.

Jim
