It says "This listing was ended by the seller because the item was sold."
I bet someone made a direct offer at a higher price and so they cancelled the auction. Could be wrong.

I hope so makes me feel a bit better, I saw it this morning one day auction thought that will go £2000-3000 easy doh!
The buyer pretty much got a 50mm for £200.
Corran is right.

I agree with Corran, but usually only "this listing is ended" is said. Is this a new policy from eBay or is the seller stupid?

It just means the seller chose to close the auction early and sold it elsewhere. I've even done it myself.

Yes, but now the seller has to pay the eBay-fee nevertheless.
I do not have experience with selling via eBay so I may be wrong.

You can choose a few different reasons to end an auction, one of which IIRC is because "it was sold" (the assumption being through a different service or venue, like CL or something). But yes, I don't seem to remember it saying that specifically.
Also, I thought it usually made you cancel all the bids first, and then you could cancel it. Maybe they've changed it, I haven't kept up with that kind of stuff.
I don't think they have to pay fees if they cancelled the auction.
And yes, I would've liked to have bought that. I really want the 1.1 but I think the ones on offer through eBay are overpriced in the current market. I've made some good-faith offers on a few lenses that were not in cosmetically good condition and still no dice. I think the dealers are holding onto them assuming the market will pick up (and I'm sure it will).

Yes, usually they are kept by dealers to attract customers (and to enhance their status) and are not really for sale. The same is true for many rare items, like the black S2 and Noctilux f/1.2. This habit deforms the price-image of the items. In reality these objects are difficult to sell even for a much lower price.

The seller's feedback tells that she's been mainly selling 2nd hand clothes and other Ralph Lauren garments for cheap. No photo gear in her past activity on eBay as a seller.
I bet she listed this Nikon RF kit for someone else who did not want/could not list it himself, then received some serious direct offers, then sold it off eBay at a price the actual person selling it wanted it to be sold.
None of the actual bidders had the least bit of chance to be the new owner of this kit.
