Good results from that scanner, Rick. Those must have been reservists, from the looks of their haircuts.

Saw this quote from the first year of the F's production. "The original price tag of the NIKON-F body was 220 USD with 19.50 USD plus for black." (which converts to about 2,100 USD in 2012 prices), so it was among the most expensive cameras.

Loved mine till they were stolen in 1987

I just picked up a black Ftn for 160$🙂🙂
Looks like a shelf queen with lite brassing on the corners

I'm a newspaper guy too (reporter, not photog), 1973-1996. I was interested in photography but didn't have a good camera. When the photographers switched from Fs to F2s one of them sold me an F for a friendly price. Through the years I was able to pick up a nice assortment of Nikkor lenses from them, a second body, etc. Everything is still in fine working condition, no repairs needed. As far as SLRs go I swear by Nikons.

That's why when I wanted to get an F2, all I could afford was a Nikkormat FTn, and that was darn near a month's pay. But it was well worth it. Finally got my F2s last year.

In 1972 I wanted a Nikon F. A friend had just gotten back from Japan where he had bought a Nikon Ftn and 50 1.4 for about $400 if I remember. I had to save hard to get a Nikormat Ftn for $190 in the local store. Still have the Nikormat and my friends Nikon Ftn. I used Nikon F cameras since 1975 and only once had a failure. On my honeymoon the F lost all speeds above 1/60 but that was a used camera from Wall Street photo. Joe

Nikon Pyramid scheme. I have 6 or 7 F's, one is dedicated to close up stuff, 55f3.5, the rest are users and one is a parts camera, just in case.
Efke 21 in Rodinal 1:100, stand development 60 min - oh, yes, shot with another F and the big sports finder.

I love the F. Not only a great camera, but one of the best pieces of industrial design ever.

It's a tossup between the M4 and F for my favorite camera. But the F is my favorite SLR.

I have a black paint F with plain prism that needs repair. Poor thing.
Time to get a new one.

Does anyone know of a reliable technician who can service or overhaul an F body?
