As previously mentioned I bought a Yashica Mat 124G on ebay and when it arrived I thought everything was fine. The viewing lens had more cleaning marks than I liked but it wasn't the taking lens so I was not too concerned. However when I opened the back and put the shutter on "B" and looked through the taking lens I realized I had been screwed. The taking lens is shot. Heavy separation and fungus covering the entire lens surface. The lens is useless.

Looking closer at the listing I realized the camera in my hands was not the camera shown in the photo on the listing. The lister posted some of the problems the camera has but not all.

He is trying to weasle out of refunding my money but I think ebay and I can convince him that it would be wise to do the right thing.

So I don't have a 124G yet. At least a working one.

But I will.

if you paid with a credit card you have a lot of leverage.. also tell the seller that you'll post feedback using the words "substituted merchandise" and "fraud".. that should get his attention

I have to confess I'm ignorant of the leverage of which you speak. I did use a CC. How can this help?

Report the issue to the credit card company and withold payment on the item unti you hear from either the seller to your satisfaction or the credit card company. Hope you have a happy Thanksgiving in any case

exactly what Kurt said.. fraud is so rampant on ebay that credit card companies don't question it these days.. they'll stop payment and file a complaint with the seller's account.. the seller has 2 weeks to contest it, otherwise you'll have your money refunded very quickly with little hassle

just call up the credit card company and tell them what date the payment was made and for what amount.. then tell them the item received was not the item shown

I'd probably tell the seller your intentions first, just to see what he's willing to do.. you might come out ahead that way

Thanks for the info. I called the CC company and they are sending me paperwork for the dispute. I can't file a dispute with ebay until after 10 days from the date of purchase but I will do so at that time.


I guess I'll have to try and make do with my Mamiya C-3 for a while longer. I was looking forward to doing some comparisons. The C-3 is a good camera and I have two good lenses for it but memory tells me that the Yashinon lens is sharper yet.

The shutter on mine won't open anymore. Rats. But I definitely will have it repaired. It's a beautiful machine!
Back on topic: if you get your refund, try and find one in your area. There are plenty of those 'Mats around.

I have a C-3 I haven't used in eons. Only an 80 mm. Sekor (chrome). virtually mint but not for sale as I keep saying to myself that I will use it soon.

The Mamiyas are a bit bulky, but this is the only TLR I've used that I like. Long ago I ran a few rolls through a Mamiyaflex C1, including a portrait sitting, and briefly used a C220 earlier this year. Both had the Porroprism, and that's good because I don't like waist-level reversed viewing. The C220 kit with 80mm and prism was like new and sold locally for $50, whatta deal...

I would suggest that before doing the credit card chargeback - you can still do that if they paypal thing doesn't work. But it should. I've been on the other side of that, paypal favors buyers.

Once again, I have to disagree with Bill.

Go to your CC company first and demand to dispute the charge!

The CC companies are fully equipped to deal with a disputed charge - they will simply note the dispute and "hold" the charge while sending you the paperwork to deal with later.

This way it is PayPal and the seller who are "out of pocket" first - not you.

This isn't a "who's nice" game. You go for the maximum protection for yourself and let things get sorted out later!

PayPal will always try to dissaude you from using your CC - note: their "default payment" is always to your bank account (wanna screw that up?)

Always do the override and insist on CC payment. It puts a 3rd Party b/w you and the seller (and PayPal - which is owned by eBay and is thus ALWAYS seller-friendly).

'nuff said - do as you want. Sorry you got screwed!
