Starchild is one of several shops in Roswell that sell UFO and alien souvenirs to the tourists. Many people believe that a spacecraft from another planet crashed near Roswell in 1947.

How likely is it I wonder that an alien spacecraft from another planet crashed near Roswell in 1947. On the balance of probability probably not, but who am I to discount the possibility. I once, in the 1970's, spoke to a monk based in the Abbey on the shores of Loch Ness who was convinced he saw the monster. He had to reason to lie to me, and I was convinced after speaking to him that he believed he saw the monster. On the balance of probability? Who knows. I believe there is more chance of an alien spacecraft landing near Roswell than there is of the existence of the Loch Ness monster.
 
Several factoids concerning some of the areas in the US that are considered important in the history of UFOlogy:

1) In 1947, the only bomber squadron in the world that was trained and experienced in the delivery of nuclear ordinance was stationed out of Roswell, New Mexico.

2) "Area 51" (nomenclature found on a USGS area map of southern Nevada; that's not its official designation by the military), has supposedly been a hot-bed of UFO activity for years, and has also been prominent in research and flight testing of advanced aircraft designs.

3) In 1947 much missile testing was being conducted at the White Sands Proving Grounds, many of them captured German V-2 rockets. Werner Von Braun was amongst those on station at White Sands in 1947. For those not familiar with the geography, White Sands is just a few minutes by air from Roswell.

I don't think it's mere coincidence that UFO reports seem to happen a lot near areas where secret government activity is occuring. And I don't think it's because there are aliens who are extraordinarily interested in such activities, but rather that UFO reports are a convenient cover-story that can provide plausible deniability for otherwise secretive aerial activity.

I've been to Roswell numerous times, and Chris's photos document the UFO tourist culture well. I'm looking forward to more from him.

There is a special on Nat Geo at the moment interviewing people at the little A'Le'inn with people talking about being visited by UFOs and aliens...😱

Loch Ness has been extensively explored and there's been no evidence of the 'monster'. I think the people who claim to have seen aliens are probably kooks, but I think life probably exists elsewhere in the galaxy. We haven't any evidence so far, but outer space is huge and we lack the technology to systematically explore it the way Loch Ness has been researched. Loch Ness is a single lake, and a not terribly large one.

I would go with the unknown water beastie over the specific alien landing.

We had one in the UK as well, at Rendlesham down in Suffolk - maybe now explained, or that could be a cover up of course.


I once saw a TV program, years ago, where some 'scientists' 'proved' the existence of intelligent alien life by multiplying the assumed number of planets capable of supporting life (very very big as space is very very big) by a small number (the probability of intelligent life evolving on on any of these planets) and getting 1...

Given the observational record and the far reaching assumptions made, I think that the alien life is likely to be more intelligent than that bunch (we just don't know)

In August 2008, driving home late one night from work on an empty secondary road with a 15 mph speed limit leading out of a business part iin Bucks County, PA I looked up randomly over the top of my convertible. I saw two black triangles in the night sky stationary, silent. They were in the distance, at (say) 10 o'clock-ish. I'd say the larger one was the relative size of your thumbnail, the more distant on the size of your pinky nail. I slowed down to try to figure out what there were... hoping to have a "oh, that's what it is... silly boy" moment. Couldn't figure out what they were. Then I stopped and stared at them for a few minutes. Eventually I went on my way and wrote it off... never knowing what, exactly, these triangles were... A couple months thereafter, I saw an advertisment for this on US TV:

Apparently, many, many people saw these things over a several month period in Bucks County, PA during the period I saw these things...

It's funny the reaction I get when I mention this to people... Not say it was "alien" or not... I just saw what I saw... What can I say?

Your not telling us what it was though🙂 Just saying what you saw. My wife and her neighbours saw some things in Zimbabwe back in the early to mid 90s. Still doesn't know what it al was.

Black triangles have been observed in "flaps" going back to the late-80's with a big flap in Belgium known as the Belgium wave. This sparked an interest in the subject I only had a cursory interest in prior. These are my favorite cases:

A school secretary that I knew of, a competent, sane, and sober woman, believed sincerely and passionately that she was abducted multiple times by aliens for medical examination. This lady was not a kooky type of person at all. Her personality and responsible life was incongruous to her claim. She died in middle age of cancer.

Frank, Abduction: Human Encounters with Aliens was a 1995 book written by the late John E. Mack and is a pretty fascinating read on the subject. Mack was a Pulitzer-prize winning Harvard psychiatrist who put 200 abductees under hypnosis, and published a book about it. He took heat from the Harvard types but took the subject seriously. Very interesting read, and it's approached (correctly) as a phenomenon that exits, "real of not" that merits serious scientific investigation. Those who had abduction experiences ran the gamut from people of all walks of life - engineers, professors, housewives...

As a person who has experienced hypnogogic dreams in my late-teens, early-20's I'm not sold on abductions and am more likely to think these experience are hypnagogia-related, but who's to say?

When I first returned to Ft. Wayne after living in Santa Fe, I lived for a year in a low-income apartment complex because I couldn't afford anything better . I had some nutty neighbors (the crack dealer downstairs was the least nutty!). One was a woman in her 50s who must have weighed 450lb. She NEVER bathed, ever, and she had a lot of facial hair and was missing some teeth. She lived there with her 25 yr old son. This woman claimed that several times a year, a UFO would land in the cornfield across the street and the aliens would come to her apartment to have sex with her! She truly believed that her son was fathered by one of the aliens! Personally, I think the alien could have done better. 😛
