This is actually one of many private monuments to the Cuban Five, a group of Cubans imprisoned in the US for espionage. They are heroes in Cuba who insists their trial was political as they were spying on the anti-Castro element in Miami and not the US government. These private monuments are all over Cuba but this is one of the more elaborate ones.
This is the third time I have visited with this family who lives outside Vinales. I bought the flag for them several days earlier in Havana as they have a flagpole but no flag. They are still unsure how to interpret me as I tell them I support their patriotism but give no indication that I agree with them politically.
