Seriously put the plastic ones through the dishwasher and try them again.

I don't have a dishwasher!
But honestly, the reel is absolutely spotlessly clean. I scrubbed and scrubbed and scrubbed, and all of the nasty deposits are gone - but the plastic has a ripply/rough texture (which was there before I scrubbed - my toothbrush isn't that harsh!).

OK good luck with the metal ones then, I flirted with them at one time but we never really hit it off

That could well be the culprit. Have you tried rolling on a scratch roll of film in open light to see if that's where it catches?
Plastic reels should be smooth with no ripples.
