Stiff focus Jupiter 12

Good evening,
I have a J12 for my Kiev that is quite good optically, but near infinity, the focus gets quite stiff. Is there any place on the web that tells how to go in and, I would presume, clean and relube this lens? I've found info for other classic russian lenses, but not for the J12.

I am tempted just to "live with it" as I am quite happy with the lens otherwise. Is fixing this something that could screw up this otherwise pretty good lens?

Thanks!

William

William I did a search and could not find repair instructions for this lens. You might want to try asking on a specialist Russian camera forum like beststuff.com. I would think that fixing it should not cause any problems.

I have a J12 (Kiev fit) that I bought cheap off ebay with a slight focus ring dent that was binding. I ended up stripping it down all the way and repaired and relubed it. The only real problem is if you don’t get the focus threads right putting it back together. If you've had lenses apart before I'd place the J12 in the easy to do basket. If you’re serious about relubing yours I'd be willing to strip mine again and take some pics for the repair section here... kind of a DIY thread... Time permitting... Interested?

That is a really kind offer!!........which William could do well to take up.

My problem with J12 is the aperture 'ring' or plate which having no clicks is all too easy to move during fast handheld use. From your memory, is it possible to add a tiny ball bearing behind the plate or effect some other cure to make the aperture control more 'settable' and positive??

Laika, I would be greatly appreciative if you take the time to do that. It would be an immense help to me and probably others as well.

William,

I stripped and photographed my Kiev Jupiter 12 for you tonight, give me a few days to write something up and edit the pic's to go with it. The only tools required are a few screwdrivers (small to very small) and a lens spanner (or a home made equivalent, long nose pliers with the tips ground to fit would work in a pinch)

Laika, this is excellent! I wish I had this before I tried to adjust my J12 - it would have been much easier.
In any case, this will be an excellent resource for anyone wanting to do any kind of work on their J12.
Thanks a million - you're great!
Denis

Excellent! That is a very well done explaination of how to do the J12. With luck I'll get it printed out and give it a shot in the next few days.

Thank you very much.
