Still using your Zeiss Ikon ZM?

Just pulled out another roll from mine. Just got a MP to go along with it.

If I were to shoot film again, it's one of the few 35mm cameras I'd love to try that I haven't.

By far my favourite camera. Use it almost every day. This was shot recently in Zagreb, Croatia.

However, the cold weather (and I live in Newfoundland and Labrador - there is a lot of cold weather here) is a problem. The battery depletes super fast and the camera just locks up. On a really cold day, can't even get through a roll. Had to send it for service (my fault) and it takes a long time to get it back from Germany - months.

Still I love that camera with a 35 C-Bigon to bits.

Okay, now I'm disappointed. The issue with my Ikon was not batteries. I bought some more this morning and the camera refused to start. I turned it on and off, checked that the batteries had been inserted correctly, nothing worked. Turning it on does nothing. No metering, no shutter, nothing.

So, I've rewound the roll that had been half shot, and will be taking it to get repaired. I hope that it isn't the issue that struck @jawarden in this thread:

Cosina still repairs them quickly and reasonably. The biggest hassle is getting your camera to Cosina in Japan but someone like japancamerahunter can handle that for you.

The price had rose considerably. Could only take it as people grabbing the now scarce camera out of appreciation!

The answer is that cold weather drops the voltage of the batteries enough to make the camera quit on me. (...) So I would expect the same problem with a ZM.

Bingo. I had the same problem with a ZI using LR44s at -10 °C. Only using the single CR 1/3N ever since...

Lovely photo! I have to ask, do the automatic-shutter Bessas have the same issue? I've been rolling the idea of a R*A around in my head as a compliment to the M2, and if the cold weather is this harsh on them it might be enough to make me give up the idea.

Yes, they do. I have an R3a, same problem.

Even in the north of England I used SR44 in winter. They work better in the cold. The single battery is also better.

Wonderful camera, even though mine has recently gone. It was a shame to sell it really, as it was the first 'good' RF I had and was absolutely formative in what and how I shoot.

You dont need to send it to Japan, I had my Zeiss Ikon repaired in germany. Considerably fast, around 3 weeks.

Of course sending to germany might not be the fastes depending on where you live 🙂

I am using mine, got it recently from service, now is like new 🙂 Hope to actually use it now a lot more. Just discover ektar and really loved the results 🙂

I use lux 28 in Voigt R4m, MP and Zeiss Ikon

the best vf is with ZI .. u can see the lower right portion.. the outside of it ... u cant do that with MP and R4M

so it makes my composition easy

The CR 1/3N battery is the best option for the ZI in cold weather. I carry a second in my pocket but don't normally need it for most days. Of course, unless you are high in the mountains, cold weather where I am is not the equal to Canada or other northern climates.

One of my ZIs has begun to have intermittent shutter problems so I guess I will have to get in touch with Bellamy and ship it to Japan for repair.

I find I tend to go in cycles where I will use my M-A for an extended period, then my ZI, and then my Leica III. Right now I am using my III a lot and the other two are getting well deserved rests. But, if I am working with really difficult light conditions that change quickly, then the ZI comes out of the drawer.

Was using it for 11 years - in the last years mostly during vacations with my family. 3 years ago the shop in a city nearby, which developed my films (and I was very satisfied with the results) closed, so I had to look for another. Now this other shop does not develop film anymore. So I had to look for another again: they developed 1 roll and the results were ... not good.

So I decided to go digital, now. I will think about selling my ZM due to limited space at home ... Sad - but it seems that's how life goes.
