just got informed by apple that some unknown device in amsterdam is trying to buy something using my id...

Normally when my ID is used on a new device I get a notice. It does not give a location.

If the information above looks familiar, you can disregard this email.

For a few years I've been using 1 Password by AgileBits Software. In addition to being able to keep all of your passwords plus other information like software keys, it also offers a password generator. It also makes it a lot easier to go in and change passwords on a regular basis.
 
I have has this before on my Facebook with an attempt to get in from Taiwan where when I logged in it alerted me to the breach - I did the same, changed my password and moved on.

1 Password is simply wonderful.

I use it for OS X and iOS. Except for the 1 Password access password (I use a short nonsense sentence such as 'carsflybirdsswim') you never have to memorize a password again.

Every login has a unique password. It is trivial to create a secure, unique password for every on-line credential you use. It is trivial to create a new password when ready. With iOS you can choose to launch the 1 Password app via thumbprint.
 
Joe, I got that message as well as my wife. They were supposed to be buying Bose noise cancelling headphones. I checked for new scams involving the apple name and it was there. I never go to the links they send because that is where they get you.

Are you in The Netherlands?
I'm living in Dordrecht and often when I use my Apple ID, I get the same message. I guess they have a problem finding your exact location and always use Amsterdam when you're in The Netherlands. It's a rather small country:)

I recently subscribed to Private Tunnel and have it configured on all my devices. Takes care of public wifi access.

And I'm about to move my domain name email address to:

ProtonMail

ProtonMail encrypts your email and if you're emailing between other ProtonMail users its encrypted both ways.
 
The first thing I do is look at the address the notice came from. You can usually pick up enough clues that it is a phishing scam without even having to open the e-mail. Things like a dot after dot com, or spaces in the address, or especially misspellings in the message subject line.

I've been getting PayPal notices lately, they've all been phishing, and I've reported them to MSN as such instead of just plain Junk.

My wife received an email, purporting to be from Apple, stating that she had subscribed to a physical fitness AP which was going to charge her $27/month. The email provided a link to unsubscribe. I asked her to forward it to me so that I could look at it in Outlook. (She uses AOL.)

The first clue that it was bogus was that it came to an address which she does not use for her applID. The sender, it turned out, was not Apple, and the "unsubscribe" link was not an Apple address either. In any event, I will be watching the charges on my credit card.
 
i thought i was an aware computer/internet user...but in a moment of confusion and plain not thinking i blindly followed the directions given...shows how easy it is to fool someone who should know better.
