Stoopid question on carrying the thing

When I bought my M8 I had the strap that came with it, then I saw the Y strap and bought it, I always used a handstrap with my 5D so never considered ti as I never used to carry the 5D around for extended periods the way that I do with my M8.

Does anybody use a handstrap?

What are your thoughts on the merits or otherwise of what you do and why you carry your camera that way.

I'm used to putting a camera on a tripod and although I like the Y strap it can be a bit cumbersome at times, if you have the adjustment piece in the wrong area you run the risk of feeling like you put yourself on anoose.

I usually carry my cameras in a messenger bag and shun neck straps (which are really shoulder straps). I use a Sling on my M8, nad a Markins leather handstrap on my 5DmkII.

Used wrist straps for a year. They are really cool when you work with your camera, otherwise carrying is more comfortable with shoulder straps (that's what I use now, just as in the beginning).

For carrying a shoulder strap - the one that came with the camera (Ikon or canon dslrs) and a voigtlander wide strap (actually surprisingly nice if you don't already have a a strap) for the R2m. I also have side grips on both rf's - they transform the comfort for me. Agree that if I'm photographing and not carrying then either a wrist strap or wrapping the shoulder strap safely way is best.

I use the short, fixed length, A&A cloth straps on both of my M cameras and find them perfect for me. They work fine when wearing around the neck, but are also a very good width/length/flexibility for securely looping on my wrist when I want (quite often). They're too short to wear over a shoulder, but the the cameras and smaller lenses that I use are light enough that I don't ever want to carry in that fashion anyway. YMMV 🙂

I use a Y Strap. I like it very much for when I'll be carrying the thing around for a while. I like it less when all I want to do is pick up the camera for a few quick snaps. Then the strap is just a lot of extra nylon getting in the way.

I've been using a wrist strap as of late. If I have a bag with me, I prefer it. I don't like having a neck strap on the bag and camera. If I don't have my bag with me then I like the neck strap. I don't change often though, preferring a wrist strap on my M8.

I have a wrist strap on both my M2 and M6, but I'm not sure I want one on the M8. My thumb protrudes too far onto the monitor screen if I hold it the same way as I hold the M2 and the M6 with the wrist strap.

So I have the strap that came with the Luigi case, and wrap it around my wrist as I'm about to shoot. I hardly ever carry it on my neck. I don't like that, and it feels kitschy to me, to do that with any camera, anyway.

This is my way too. I find the long neck/shoulder strap to be the best as it affords me the flexibilty to wear the camera around my neck, over my shoulder or in my hand with the strap wrapped around my wrist depending on if I have one or two bodies in use at the time.

I've never tried a dedicated wrist strap as it won't give me the options that the longer ones do.

I'll go with this one too. When changing film it's really handy to be able to hang the camera around my neck or from my shoulder. While actively shooting I follow Al's method, and take up the strap with several turns around the wrist (usually the left).

Ditto for me all the way. My straps are the Voitlander straps, made by A&A (I used a little nailpolish remover to remove the silkscreened Voitlander name from the leather endpieces). Just don't sling these straps on your shoulder, because they don't grip well and will slip off.

Thanks for the input, as with all things Leica, my solution is going to be expensive, I have emailed Luigi about making a hand strap with the quick release clip that he uses on the newer straps that he says on his website take 4 seconds to undo. Then I'll get a shoulder strap with those two qr clips.

And then in 3 months I'll change my mind....................

When I'm going to be wearing the camera all day, or will be doing stuff other than shooting, I wear a cross-body strap.

I started with a Tamrac strap with suede shoulder pad. Very comfortable, but when you wear that cross-body and pull up the camera to eye level, the strap rubs on your shoulder and wears out your sweater/jacket fabric.

So I got a Y-strap, but I found that split ring wide enough to slide easily on the strap was too wide to move comfortably on the strap lug of the camera.

So I switched to a LeicaGoodies strap, which is a similar concept (just not adjustable in length). The camera hangs more neatly from that, but the strap isn't as plushly comfortable on the neck/shoulder as the Y-strap. Oh well, can't have everything.

When I'm just shooting for a moderate period of time and/or have someplace safe to put down the camera if I have to use my hands for something else, I use a wrist strap. Luigi leather strap with camera protector tab. Nice strap, but I find it's an inch or 2 too short for my hand size, and it will take a while for the rough interior surface to wear smooth and not bind when I slip the strap on/off my wrist.

When I carry my camera (dslr, slr or my rf) I wrap the neck strap around my wrist. I thought about getting a wrist strap, but there are times when I just simply need my hands free and need to hang the camera on my neck.

I bit the bullet and bought the Luigi neck strap with the quick disconnect carabiner type hooks and then asked him to make me a wrist strap with the carabiner on it as well so that I can wear one or other and put the other one in my pocket if I want to change it. The trouble I have with these o rings is that I don't have any nails so keep fighting the things.

I have so little doubt that in 12-18 months I'll be lookingor another solution 🙂
