I decide ahead, if I want all in focus or just the subject... I do use the Hyper-focus scale quite a bit too. with my 28 and 35, I almost always shoot this way... always ready... but I tend to have about 5-15 in DOF area. not 5-INF.

What I have in mind is that you could take the bench and people out of this photo and still have an interesting and well composed photo of the background. So you have included the two elements into the same photo. Rather than focusing your attention on the subjects here and letting the background get sloppy, ect.A couple more examples (maybe) of what the OP has in mind (perhaps?): With a 35:
