Strange Jupiter 12 for Kiev

Anyone who got an answer :
I have a J-12 for Kiev (1957) outstanding performer, but the rear element is protected by metal rings. I had while unscrewing this ring, cleaned the inside of the rear element, repainted it with black mat paint where there was not anymore, etc...
My other samples have not this metal rings, the lenses are glued together.
Is it just for protecting the rear element ? Is it for production facility ? Is it like the original Zeiss Biogon ?
Thanks to all of you.

Good question. My black 1985 Jupiter 12 doesn't have this metal band but has a "V" indented waist.Oh yes, here is my 1959 metal example, just the same as yours with the metal band.
By the way everyone writes about how much the rear element protrudes.
Yes it does, but I have never seen this as a problem. I have looked at nearly 50 examples in the past 15 years and never seen a chipped or scratched rear element.

Sadly, I've bought three J-12's, and have two with scratches. The one without scratches had a bad mount (popped apart on the camera- spitting the lens out!) so I switched rear elements with one of the scratched ones.

I'm in business now, one J-12, but it's good. I was only half hoping that the rear elements would interchange.

I have an older J-12 built as shown above, but the other two are the glued variety.

Yes it appears it looks like the original Biogon...😉
I bought this J-12 in a nice working Kiev IIIa from 1957 too, and the previous owner wrote his name under the lightmeter and under the film pressure plate. I can't resist to show you a picture...
Does anyone know a mister Solotarev or something like that in St-petersbourg ? (That's where the Kiev comes from !) Perhaps he has the answer...

My J12 for Kiev also has a scratched rear element (looks like the coating only), but I haven't been able to see any signs of it in my shots, but I'm only shooting B&W with it. I'll have to try a roll of c41 colour.

The trouble with the large rear element, may be more of a user handling, "butter-fingers" syndrome. Mine also came w/o the case, which probably didn't help. I did find that a plastic film cannister (not the cartridge) fits the element perfectly, so that's my rear cap now.

Marcel,
the very early J-12 lenses all had that ring - later in production it was dropped.
