I picked up a second hand M6 recently (Don't even get me started on the horror stories involved with it, lets just say they didn't inform me of numerous critical problems with the camera until I took it back, they didn't look happy to see I wanted it serviced since they sold be a POS, but thats a story for when the problem is resolved).

ANYWAY, the shutter has this strange springy sounds at low shutter speeds, is this normal for M camera's? Below 1/8th etc is makes this strange whirring sounds between when the shutter is open and closes. I can't figure out if this is the springs in the cloth shutter or an actual problem with the shutter itself, anyone know which one? Faster shutter speeds (from about 1/30 onwards) do not have this associated whirring noise.

Thanks a bunch,

-Tim

The little buzzing is the clockwork timing the shutter, regulating the time delay for the second curtain to start its travel, quite normal. Not sure if "springy" sounds like buzzing. 🙂

Ahhh, so thats what it is. It is a slight buzzing sound, so I guess it's nothing to worry about. Thankyou very much Doug!

My recently adquired M6 do that too. From 1s to 1/8 it makes a ticking sound. It's the timing for the slow speeds. In 1/15 and 1/30 you can hear a sound like a little metal ball or something is bouncing inside when the shutter closes. Very characteristic. From that to 1/1000, no strange sound, jutst the shutter.
All that sounds are normal, as I've been told.

All Ms make these noises. Worry only if they don't.
