Hi people
Did anyone see the sunday 17 th mens section of the New York times
Leica had an add it there for a M7
Now this strikes me alittle strange
Why would leica start a new add campaine with a camera 4 years old
And a bad '' not good '' add at that
Did the M8 just come out?
Yea it did.
This is like apple starting a new add for ther latest ipod of 2006
and showing the image of a ipod from 2000
People i'd like to know your thoughts on this
thanks

The M7 is their latest film camera...therefore it will still be made and still be advertised. The M8 is a compliment to the film cameras, not a replacement. Your analogies don't really work.

I think the add just shows a commitment to their current product line and they look at the M8 as an addition not a replacement.

Why advertise the M8 to the masses when the thing is going to be back ordered into next year? I was at Tamarkin NY today and the guy said they have something like 150 M8 pre-orders alone.

And my Leica rep. from Chicago told me that Leica would be shipping M8s to the US at a rate of all of 2 per month. I don't know when/if that rate will increase, but as is it will be a lifetime before most people ever get to shoot with one. :(

erikhaugsby,

Don't tell me you actually believed that? Maybe if the designers themselves were on the production line.... ALONE....

Tamarkin isn't requiring a deposit. I doubt all 150 will actually buy the camera but a good number will. I know I will.

They have a full-page ad in this week's Amateur Pornographer (UK) showing the M8 alongside the M7 - the idea being that they are both the pinnacle of their respective markets, film and digital.

I'm not sure I will ever be able to afford the M8 though - something like £3000 ($6000) over here - ouch!

Stephanie
i am not making an analogy between film & digital cameras
nore am i saying that the M8 is replacing the M7
i am talking about what is leica current product at the moment
my thoughts are that leica has spent a lot of money and R&D in this new system
Times mens fashion audience is geared to men 25 and up
most of the fashion is progressive
being in fashion i beleave that announcement of the M8 might have been a better
choice
film is in no way dead
but fom a marketing point of view it might make more sence
thanks:rolleyes:

Amateur PORNOGRAPHER??????????

"Amateur Pornographer" - I haven't heard it called that for a while! That title dates back to what the magazine became in the late 1970s/early 1980s when you'd be hard-pressed to find much in it relating to anything other than nude photography. The front cover was such that some newsagents moved it to the top shelf.
Surely one of the main reasons that Leica is suddenly advertising the M7 again is that it needs to boost sales and we all know what that could mean...

The AP (very rare that there are any nudes in it these days apart from animals) ad shows M7 and M8 side by side to clearely show the family line of the M, the M7 is the closest film M to the M8, electronic shutter, shutter dial direction and AE, although the MP frame selector is used on the M8.

Will the M7 continue for long, well who knows. I've a feeling that the M7 production will be reduced to free resourced to M8 production with support for the MP continueing. Just my two cents

That Times men's fashions supplement had a section on investment-grade watches -- I just thought the M7 seemed to fit well there, given that it's "old" technology. Of course, an ad for the MP might have been even more appropriate.

One thing I learned is to listen but never believe what any rep says. If Leica wanted to go out of business, delivering two M8s a month would do it.

Ridiculous!

Leica is still committed to producing film cameras and from what I have read on the web, plans on updating the M line in the future.

ROFLMAO !

Assuming another 2/month for EU, plus 3/month for the rest of the planet it would mean a production of 2 cameras/week... a failure even if it costed 48,000$ :p

That's when I began to take a keen interest in photography ;).
Actually, AP's editor ran an editorial saying that they wouldn't be having any more glamour/porn (delete as appropriate) issues any more as he got so many complaints about the last one.

Back on topic, I don't see why Leica shouldn't run adverts for items in their current catalogue. Presumably they still want to sell M7's.

Two per month...

My dealer told me that his initial allocation is on the order of 35 units and made no mention having it trickle in at some snail's pace...

I think that I'm like #2 or #3 on his pre-order list so it may not make any difference to me... ;)
