Thanks for all the answers!
I'll be away and off-line for the weekend and shoot a few more rolls to test the above rewinding theory.
I'll check in again on monday.
Have a nice (photo-) weekend,
Peter

I certainly didn't mean to infer "cap the lens and live with it" but it would be a useful technique to run down the problem. I think getting any issue resolved is easier if one can say with surety that "X" happens when I do "Y" but performing "Z" first prevents it all.x-ray said:Why should you have to do this? I't should cap properly for $3,500!!
Otherwise one runs the risk of the repair being placed in the hands of a lazy technician who does not research the issue fully. NOTHING is more difficult to resolve than an intermittent problem.

You're right Mark, better to exclude all the 'none issues' before sending it in...
That is why I'd like to get an answer to the following...
I didn't get to shoot a lot over the weekend, but retrieved a 'missing' roll from my wife's handbag...
While scanning I encountered this phenomenon below...
It's not always there, but it's always on the edges of a frame. (both images are cropped)
Do you think it's the same or a related problem?
Or is this something different?
Thanks, Peter

Peter:
Were you shooting color neg? Looks like light fog to me and where the lens isn't capping properly at one end of the exposure cycle. 99% certainy it's light fog and capping problems. I would say the same of my problem, 99% shure.

Time to send it in for service. If it's not under warranty i would feel better sending it to DAG. I think he does better work than Leica.

I feel your pain!
I feel like leica's living on past reputation not current quality. I can't remember any of my other pro friend when I started shooting M's 39 years ago ever having a problem with their cameras other than damage from hard use. I don't think Leica even tries anymore since the pro market switched to SLRs. In the 50's and 60's 70% of the pro market was Leica and the rest Nikon RF. When the Nikon F hit the market many of us adopted them but still used our M for shorter lenses. Now that a very small percentage of us are using them professionally they don't seem to care about the quality that was expected in the 50's and 60's. Non professionals look at equipment differently than a pro. Leica's now about name and heritage and the perception of quality and sells mainly to a market that runs a few hundred rolls in a lifetime vs those of us shooting thousands of rolls in a few years. In the 60's and into the 70's I figures I shot over 10,000 rolls of film through my 3 used M bodies with virtually no problems. Never untill the 80's generation equipment have I had any real problems. Now 4 lenses and 1 custom body in 1-1/2 years. Looks like a good indicator of QC and where the priorities are.
It's likely I'll buy no more leica gear and if I have continued problems this body will go to DAG and if it still has a problem it will be retired as a novelty for my son. It has my name engraved so it's would'nt be worth much in sale but if my others give problems they will be sold and replaced with ZI's. Lenses are included in this. I'll say that my ZI and ZM equipment has been perfect over the past year of hard use and the CV lenses that I have have given no problems at all.
