Strangers on the street you've asked if you can take their picture

This fellow came out his store to ask me about the Sekonic L608 he saw hanging around my neck. He'd bought a Sekonic meter cheap and wanted to know how it worked. He let me take his picture.

This young Iraqui asylum seeker asked ME to take his picture. Heposed proudly and glanced at his friends to see if they watch. Then he ran to see himself, took a look on my Rolleiflex ground glass and said, disappointed: Man i am not even in the frame!

This is a great thread and I'm learning a lot from it. I've been studying the work of August Sander, a German portrait photographer of the early 20th century. His photos were always consensual and they have enormous power.

Sander worked on a project that was to compile portraits of people from all walks of life. A documentary of people of different professions who lived near his city of Cologne. The project was published in a book called, "Face of Our Time", or "Man of the Twentieth Century", which was later banned by the Nazis. These portraits had to be consensual, due to his style of photographing. Wonderful, wonderful portraits.

I try not to ask permission to take pictures, mainly because I've had enough people tell me no (why? shy? afraid of getting caught by a wife or husband?) that it's easier to just take a picture and escape.

These two were from when the Democratic Presidential Debates came to Philadelphia, PA last fall. I happened upon this guy chomping down on a philly soft pretzel, hanging out waiting for Hillary Clinton to show up. I asked him where he got the pretzel, he told me he'd get me one if I took his picture. Done deal.

These ladies were hanging out close by also waiting for Hillary. Also very friendly, but no pretzels from them.

Both pictures taken with Yashica Electro 35 GSN. I was using cheap color film at the time, since I was caught by surprise.

That's the best story! How soon we forget older technology!

Tripod, he actually never knew I took the photo.These were taken down at the bus station downtown. A very busy place where one can kind of hide with a camera.
