hey,

need a decent but cheap strap for my m6. I have the leica Neoprene strap, and the quality is great... so is the comfort. But i like to wrap the strap round my wrist when im out shooting.... and the neoprene doesn't like that.

Anyone got any decent recommendations?

Luigi's straps are marvelous, but not cheap (not too expensive either, but not cheap).

Have you seen a Domke Gripper? You may want to try before you buy to see it it wraps the way you like.
 
Domke grippers are on all my cameras 120 and 35m, i messed around for years with leather and other canvas type straps and eventually migrated back to the Domke's which i'd bought in the first place and which seem to last for ever. The larger width version suits the 120 RF's very well. I also prefer the versions without the quick change spring clips.

Robert White and Jacabs carry them in the UK.

Here's a quick n dirty scan showing the rubber grips built into the strap - you can fix to the camera with the supplied split key type rings (don't know the correct word for these) or thread through the eyelets of the camera itself (as i've done here on the TX-2) Domke also supply leather protectors that prevent the strap or metal rubbing on the sides of the camera. So Domke cover all angles. Which is nice.

Thin nylon is the cheapest. The thin Nikon straps of the 1970s are the best leather ones I have seen. They were stitched [edit] lengthwise.

Get a good strap for your M6. I second the choice of Luigi's leather straps. Well made and will last a lifetime.
 
I find the original Leica nylon straps sold w/ the M6 to be very good, or try the UPStrap (expensive, but cheap compared to those "deluxe" leather ones..)

I like those too, but you have to put them on right, otherwise your M8 might drop ;) J/K

I favor the Domke Gripper (<= 20 $) for rangefinders' low weight, too. It can be reversed on the shoulder: one side has a rubber non-sliding surface, the other is just nylon = sliding. I would get the one with swivel hooks, so the orientation of the starp when you pick up the camera does not matter and there is no need to twist and turn the strap. Great design.

Much more universal than the UPSTRAP ( I have one), Neoprene all the way on the shoulder, cannot easily move therefore and annoys if you have your arm through it and want to shoot quickly ... And that one is always twisted on my camera and witout swivel hooks (unavailable !) it is rather annoying to me. It stays on the F100, though ... And the F100 stays put and does not get to go out much ...
 
Straps are one of those accessories that seem to accumulate. Considering what they do and how much you need and use them they can become very personal. Although a really good one may seem expensive, if you are using it on your favorite Leica or other camera its a minor investment.

I still have and use a custom made strap given to me by my sister many years ago. Designed after the old Leica strap its still in great condition being made with the best leather, tooled edge impression and horsehair stitching replacing any metal in the design. On my R-D1 I've got a double thick Artisan & Artist ACAM-282 leather strap, nicely made and very strong - don't have to worry about this strap failing. Just picked up one of Artisan & Artist's Japanese traditional 'Kumihimo' braided silk cord straps a couple weeks ago, very soft on the hand and flexible, maybe the strongest strap that's non-metal ever made, camera lugs will give out before this strap does! Thought I'd stick with an all Japanese theme for my new Nikon SP :)

In general I don't go for shoulder pads, metal or plastic adjustment buckles these days as I tend to wrap the strap around the lens for storage and to protect the lens when its in the bag.
 
i am a wrist strap man all the way.... my favourite are the all leather tiny wrist straps luigi makes. i have used them on all my Ms and on my IIIc.
