Street Gurus

Social media killed street photography.

Street photography had its charm, now it has become a victim of online cliques, groups, gurus, workshops, meets and youtube videos.

Any activity that becomes too common loses its appeal.

I'm pretty sure he's getting a huge kick out of the long thread he's (wait for it) provoked.

A category for street photography is a good idea. Just post thoughts, links, work...clearly there's a demand for it. Why not.

You mean what Daido Moriyama was doing 30-40 years ago?

i completely get what you are saying Colin although, and i was thinking of this earlier, i only see a similar 'processing style'. as far as content, most of what i see via this particular 'street photographer' is sorely lacking it.

I know that Eric Kim isnt the most popular person, but I have to say that in the time before he was established he'd independently found my photos and on his own chose to give me lots of shout outs on twitter (mostly during #follow friday, where people suggest other users to follow).

I've never met him personally, and my interactions were only through twitter, but I have to say he struck me as being a very genuine person, and he didn't stand to gain anything by doing that.

I get that his approach annoys some, and I get why, I just wanted to put my experience in for context.

I don't know who any of these people are.. is it so complicated someone needs a mentor? Maybe people just need something photography related to do during the Winter?

Maybe we should delete the thread before he finds it!

Eric or Steve 🙂 ?

Nice bloggers, but no photographs to look at. Worth to look at.
I want AirFroogy to mentor. He knows about street photography, he is photographer. I'm not fan of his, but he has his own vision and knows how to behave well. We have coffee with mentors section, I wouldn't mind to have beer with him!

LoL Mentoring might be better suited for someone else.

I think just a forum for street work and we can all post and discuss the work. No one in charge except the mods to keep it friendly.

Gear aspects aside, personally I would not like to see anybody being in charge for featuring photographers at the Leica Blog also being a mentor here at RFF in a street photography section....

Apart from that, I would neither put Alex nor Erik into the category "street photographer". Street-photography, as I see it, is more like the work of these guys:

Siegfried Hansen: http://www.street-photography-hamburg.siegfried-hansen.de/

Shin Noguchi: http://www.shinnoguchiphotography.com/photo/ready_or_not/

Liu Tao: http://www.boredpanda.com/self-taught-perfectly-timed-street-photography-china-tao-liu/

Gabor,

This was one of my issues. I believe Alex was a "feature" based on his fanboyism of Leica (as is obviously a pre-requisite of the Leica blog). This is when I first noticed him making claims of being a photojournalist but there being no evidence of it. Anywhere. Ever.

As for Eric being featured, this seems to be an exercise in meta by Leica - Eric is a blogger first and foremost. So, a blog feature about a blogger...

I could very well say that I'm a neurosurgeon - in fact I am. There. I demand a pay rise 😀

I was just thinking about the phrase "Street Gurus" and had a scary mental image of guy wearing a turban and a loin cloth walking around with a Leica hanging around his neck...

Yep, every time I see "Guru" I have same outfit in my mind. But it not politically correct. "Street guru" these days are more on white trash side, wearing idiot hat and going nowhere from mama's basement. They meditate in front of computer.

Oh....the "hipster" scum that have utterly fouled up men's clothing sizes ?

Because they are all skinny, an XL shirt is now really a medium. I tried on a 3XL shirt the other day ( I normally wear an XL) and couldn't get it buttoned.

And those ))*%#&^ hats ! I want to grab them and burn them !
