Street(level) Photography?

Yeah, I've seen those...I just don't want to spend any money on this. Ideally this will be the start of some unconventional photography projects from me.

I do a lot of tabletop photos, no viewfinder or rangefinder check, just zone focusing. Interesting effects, I look forward to your results.

A beanbag would be a good idea, especially if the ground you will set the camera down on is not level. A freezer bag with coffee beans or cereals will do the trick. Did I say I love freezer bags? 😉

Here's one held just slightly above the sand (for obvious reasons). This was with a digicam with a swiveling LCD, which worked as a nice WLF.

I know exactly what you mean, Stephanie. 🙂 We've been very happy living on the shoreline. The kids are on the beach almost every weekend during the warm months (you can see his sunburned skin). We usually come for just an hour or two either early or late in the day to avoid the crowds.

Interesting idea. Definately use the hyperfocal distances. On your J-12 you can get a pretty healthy amount of DOF. (rummages in camera bag) ah, there it is. Put the infintiy mark on the right hand (as you look down on the camera held normally) and set the aperture and everything from 1 meter to infinity is in acceptable focus. Focused at infinity instead and you'll only have about 1.8 meters to infinity... 😱 big difference, I know. But the same thing at larger apertures or longer focal lengths is very handy indeed.

Yeah, yeah - but what I'd like to know is whether you pay the seagull "union scale" for posing? http://www.rangefinderforum.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=18453

Stephanie,

I used one of those little cheap tripods (you can even get one in a lens cleaning pack) for this shot. Wide open on my GSN, with a self timer as I didn't have my shutter release cable with me. I willed this woman to time her steps. She almost got it right.

I did something similiar a few years back in Venice Beach, CA. Focusing was easy b/c I was using 400 speed film and it was usually f/16, so I hyperfocused it. The images came out sharp. The neat result was the unusual, generally non-symetrical framing. I didn't put my Leica on the sidewalk though, preferring to hip shoot. I had alot of fun w/ it and the fotos remain some of my favorites. Good luck.

I also do these shots quite a bit. I eventually broke down and bought a bogen table top tripod. I still get alot of ground in the foreground, which is what I like about these shots. Another benefit of the tripod is that you can take upright photos.
I like to use the self timer to remove myself from the end result. Sometimes the best things which happen in life are due to happenstance. Maybe almost all the good stuff. With the self timer you can also put yourself in the frame, which is fun too.
