Street photography with a 300mm

But the original argument was that you have to be in it, to better capture it, not observe from a distance.

Which is probably generally the case, but not not always the case. I use 28mm / 35mm / 50mm ... because I like to be close. However, there is no one way to make a great photograph.

One must be really good protographer to make good photos with such a long lens. I normally take crap shots with 300mm.

That's just the challenge 😉

It's not my style, but I see lots of young Koreans using long lenses on the street because the locals mostly don't like being photographed.

I've forgot about this one...not 300 but somewhere between 80 and 200. Rather closer to 80-100.

I came across a chap with a huge zoom lens on an outing a while back, it looked too aggressive to me ...

Yes he uses a 5d and a 5d2 with zooms up to 500 (I think)
He covers late night after pub scenes and right wing street protests.
He`s been beaten a few times too.
