So THAT is the right lens for streetphotography. And I always wondered... 😀

... 800mm plus 1.4 extender.

O.k. it's 6x7. So the focal-length translates to about 380mm (or 540mm w/ extender) in 35mm. But man ... You better bring a heavy tripod and plenty of room and time to set things up with ya..

Check out the candids down the page.. You also better back off plenty to get anything in the frame..

Don't want to offend, but I'll stick with 35/40/50 for now. 😉

Look in the 'News' forum, and at the 'Photokina Today' thread.

In the first post there is a photo of a Zeiss 1700mm lens mounted on a Hasselblad, and the camera looks *tiny*.

Ridiculous.
I love that these things are always "tested" on distant buildings and antennae... Probably the idea is, the image should be as boring as possible in order not to distract the viewer's attention from the technical qualities of the lens, LOL.
These lenses are specialty stuff made for certain purposes (I guess. I hope.).
Just as Mark says. A heavy tripod and a meter long white lens, and he wants to be the candid photographer. Yeah right.
I hope those "street portraits" are better than the crops he presented.

Of course, if he has lotsa cash to waste, it's his business. If it makes him happy, it's good for him.

Thanks for posting it, Hans🙂

BTW, has anyone every lifted an 800mm f/4 Takumar? It is really a two person lens.

A lens you mount the camera onto, as opposed to mounting the lens onto the camera. I feel that way with my 80-200/2.8 Nikon. I couldn't imagine a 800mm!

This LL article is humorous, btw. Interesting but humorous. Seems like a lot of effort to acheive the undetected candid. He needs to practice shooting with a RF, a 35mm lens, and hip shot techniques. I don't mind his end result much, but I agree they "feel" a little odd.

thanks for the link. 🙂

At first, I thought this was a really inside joke that I just wasn't getting, but it's for-real. I suppose I should be happy that LL devoted this much space to film-burning gear, but "candid"? "Street"? Maybe if I was working for the old East German Stasi, it would make sense. Those "portraits" had all the intimacy of a suveillance camera, only with better resolution, of course. To paraphrase Clint Eastwood (from The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly), I've rarely seen so much photographic technology wasted so badly.

Hmmm... This was taken with a big white zoom (640mm equiv 35mm F0V):

julie_jim_sorrento-1-web.jpg

And I was very noticable (though they are friends)

whereas these young ladies on a fine spring day never saw or heard my RF

I don't carry the big zoom to be inconspicious (or, except for accidental opportunities, for "people" shots: its for wildlife & sports).
